I'm trying to decide if I need both the Ergo (with the infant insert) AND the Moby, or if just the Ergo would be fine. Any thoughts? I'd like to have at least one on hand before the baby comes.

Moby AND/OR Ergo?

I have both. I liked moby when DS was really little, it was more like a little cacoon for him. I had the infant insert for the ergo, but never used it. Since about 7 months I have never used the moby.
So I guess I would say that if $ is not an issue, get both, otherwise, get the ergo only. Seems like it is more useful for a longer period of time.

I came here from the front page; both of my kids are finished being "worn", for the most part.
I had both, and I loved them for different reasons. When my kids were teeny and newborns, I loved to wear them in the Moby. It was my very favorite carrier for tiny babies, because it kept them so very close and very snuggled up to my body.
When they were a little bigger (i.e., liked to look around and could hold their heads up), I liked the Ergo because it is so fantastic for a back carry and provides so much support for a front carry for bigger/heavier kids. I never used the infant insert; I just used the Moby until then.
Enjoy. I miss wearing my babies!!!

Personally, I do not find the Ergo comfortable to use with small babies (or new babies) with or without the insert. The Pikkolo is a much better option, as there's no insert needed and it's made so that you can fit a small baby in there nice and tightly against you (can't do that with an Ergo). I want to love the Ergo, but I really didn't find it comfortable as a front carrier.
I vote the Moby for sure and another SSC besides the Ergo.

I could live without the moby (dd seemed too big at first to fit comfortably.... she was over 10 lbs) but I have carried small babies in it and LOVED it..... I can't live without my Ergo.
I saw someone with the becco and it has an infant insert built in. Maybe try that one too. It seemed quite similar to the Ergo.

yeah, a Beco Butterfly is another option. I have one but I didn't get it until last summer so DS was already a toddler. I can't imagine using it w/a brand new baby, but definitely with a small infant.
If it's absolutely one or the other, get the Ergo. Generally, a Moby wrap can only be used for the first 6 months, if that. I can comfortably wear my 30 lb 2 yr old (and my 4 yo if necesssary) in the Ergo -- so it will last you much, much longer.

My feeling is, the Ergo is great for bigger babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, but it's not what I'd use with a newborn or young baby.
I'm not a wrap person, I personally prefer a pouch sling in the early days, but if you think the Moby is for you, then I'd get that and an Ergo without the infant insert.

Yes, you want both
.
I used the Ergo w/o the infant insert from about 4 weeks, just tucked her up all cozy legs in.
But, the Moby was invaluable for a long time.
Now, Moby is retired, I use a Maya ring and the Ergo daily, but have huge Moby love still.
I say both if you can afford them

Hmm...well, without the insert, getting both isn't as expensive...
That's a great idea! What would I do without you mamas to give me such good advice?
I will have to look into those other options as well. I have been leaning toward the Moby and Ergo because I have two bad discs in my lower back, and I've heard these two are the best for not causing a lot of back pain.
Ring slings that go over just one shoulder (like a messenger bag) seem like they'd hurt.

My personal rec would be to go for a Moby and then a Calyx for when baby is older. I like the Calyx best as an SSC both for the built-in seat and the styling. I also find it distributes the weight better across my whole body - the Ergo (and even Beco) seem to transfer a lot of weight to the hips/pelvis. Which would be fine except that having two babies broke mine and that's where I tend to get sore if I overdo it

I am leaning toward getting both. (Technically we can afford it, but I think DH is in a slight daze with all the baby stuff I have been buying lately...)
I think DH would like the Ergo better because it has straps/buckles, etc, and looks more backpack-ish, less like a mei-tei with fabric straps to tie. For me, the Ergo is all about not causing back pain (I have two bad discs.) This is also my reason for the Moby, since I've heard it distributes weight really well across both shoulders and the back.
I'm s l i g h t l y worried about the heat factor for the Moby, since we live in South Texas and our babe is due in June. But we do have a lot of AC around here, so when we go out I always have to bring a jacket in the summer anyway. Hmm...
