Here's a half answer: there is a food grade linseed oil that will work great. My father-in-law used it for our cradle. There are two kinds of linseed oil, so make sure you get the right one.
I found a natural, non-toxic (ie, edible) wood finish at Restoration Hardware last year, gave a tub to my dad, who loves making wooden toys but always just used vegetable oil, which can go rancid. I can't find it on their site now, but it existed at some point, so maybe try a websearch??
