I think I have an idea, but someone spell it out for me PLEEAAASE! LOL

What do you think it means?

It took me months to figure it out because I didn't want to ask. For the longest time I thought it meant people who hang their clothes out to dry because that makes them "crunchy."

Now I know that it means granola. I was crunchy the whole time and didn't even know it.

crunchy granola=yummy

crunchy people= according to my mother, my DH and I. Another way of saying "hippies" a word that I think doesn't really apply to people anymore, it was a time and place!

Anyway, I associate crunchy in terms of people with those who are a tread a bit ummm off the beaten path shall we say? Love the earth, love people, love animals. Try to be as naturally minded as possible. Umm what else, I don't know I think it means something different to everyone.

My mom says I'm crunchy, I tell her I'm just too lazy to shave my legs every day! TMI sorry!

I take crunchy to mean someone who lives a more natural life. Which could include cosleeping, bf'ing, vegetarian/vegan/organic eating, cloth diapering, natural birthing...etc.
Anything that's out of the main-stream in a "natural" kind of way. The meaning has changed a lot in the decades since the 60's or so. 40 years ago, making your own granola instead of eating Chex Mix would be crunchy (hence the term), but granola itself has pretty much mainstreamed since then. Now, probably, eating locally, or following a vegetarian or traditional foods diet would probably earn you the crunchy badge.

Same thing with something like breastfeeding... now that most women at least start off "trying" to BF, and the media/ medical world gives it so much more lip-service, breastfeeding in and of itself wouldn't really be considered "crunchy"; it would take something like extended BF or exclusive BF, something like that.

Cloth diapering, non-vaxing, non-circing, reading Mothering instead of Parenting,... Anything that makes your mainstream friends roll their eyes a little and say, "you know, she's such a hippie sometimes with all that "natural" stuff..."

MDC is essentially crunchy.

I think sometimes crunchy and AP can overlap. But to me, crunchy is someone who is "green". You know they ones carrying the SS cups and having their kids play with wooden toys. Maybe driving a bio-diesel car, composting, eating local and organic foods etc.

To me AP would cover things like extended breastfeeding, cosleeping etc.

hmmm..I have a vague idea of crunchy and based on someone's stats can decide whether or not I think they are crunchy....but I wonder how many of the above listed "crunchy" criteria you'd need to qualify for to need to be crunchy? There should be a "are you crunchy?" quiz or something.

Out of curiosity, I had to see if there really is a quiz. And, alas, there really is one!

Good for curing boredum if you're interested.

I "Love that Whole Grain Crunch" apparently. Seems about right, I'm definitely not as crunchy as they come, but working my way there!

That quiz says I'm crunchier than Grape Nuts
post #15 of 44
LOL I got 130: Super Nutty, Ultra-Crunchy, Granola Earth Mama!
I love the word crunchy. No one knows what it means but everyone knows what its talking about.

Its a very multilevel word!
It refers to granola, which was coined a hippie food after being served for breakfast at Woodstock in 1969. So, when people say "crunchy" they mean "hippie." Generally it's a term used to describe people who practice Natural Family Living.

I'm 162 on the second quiz but only around 100 on the first quiz, which was not as complete.

I'm either "Love that Whole Grain Crunch" or "Super Nutty, Ultra-Crunchy, Granola Earth Mama!"

I like the second one better Maybe I should make that my user title

Anyone with a computer, who surfs and post on the net is not crunchy IMO

To me a really crunchy person would balk at TV, internet, electricty, modern society and be living in a yurt on a hillside somewhere.

ETA: oh and I took the quiz and I was jello

I wouldn't call shunning society "crunchy"

To many of us it entails taking responsibility for our impact on the world as well as our community's impact and trying to make the word a better place.
