Jewish Mamas....HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE THE NAME "JAEL"?

Thank you!

In Hebrew, it is pronounced "ya-EL". There is no "J" in Hebrew. Everywhere you see a "J", think "Y": Jeremiah is Yeremyahu (YE-rem-YA-hu), Jesse is Yishai (yee-SHY), Jedediyah is Yedidya (ye-DEED-ya), etc.

If you're asking as a baby naming point of view, I knew an Israeli girl named Yael -- easier spelling for the non-Jewish folks to get the hang of.

Thanks! In "Jael" does the "a" have a long or short sound? "Yah-el" or
"Yay-el"...... ? Yes, I'm trying to decide on some names for our baby coming in July.

If I wanted to do the "real" Hebrew name Jael, I'd actually have to spell it with a Y, is that right?

Jael is one of my favorite women in the Bible, but before naming a baby after her - do you know what she did?
Apparantly her family knew the leader of the enemy army (someone correct me if I am wrong), and he came to her tent and she fed him and gave him warm milk and he slept and she killed him by pounding a tent stake through his temple.
I personally see her as a strong and faithful woman, but just so you know before naming a baby after her.

Could I possibly hijack a little bit and ask the same about the name Elior?

Short A. "Yah-EL". Most Hebrew names place the emphasis on the second syllable. If you live in the south, be prepared to hear a lot of "YAY-el" or "Yale". (I know an Israeli Yael who lived in Texas for a while- she really hated the way people mispronounced her name.)

Yes. Otherwise your child will be forever explaining. "Yes, it's pronounced with a 'Y' sound but it starts with a 'J'."

Yes! But Yael also means "mountain goat", which is a lot less... scary.

Elior: G-d is my light. Masculine. Pronounced "eli-OR."

Other variations:
Ori ("my light", masculine)
Orli ("my light", feminine)
Lior ("my light", masculine)

Thanks..! PLS read to answer another question..! :)

[QUOTE=Mommal;13531062]Elior: G-d is my light. Masculine. Pronounced "eli-OR."

Please tell me "Why" you spell God without the "o"...? my husband *just minutes ago* was reading about "this day in Jewish history" or something like that and he asked me if Jews can't or won't spell out the name God. It was a website. so, I'm sincerely asking, why is that? I am intriqued by Jewish facts, customs, holidays, my dad and his family are christiams but don't celebrate Christmas or Easter, instead celebrate Jewish "holidays". Thanks, everyone. btw, thanks for the information about Jael from the bible. I was so excited when I discovered the female Noah in the book of nUmbers (ch 27) when I was pg for my last baby. I love her role in history. i'm not sure if the actions of Jael will influence oour decisions but def. something to think about.

I just wanted to say that I have a friend named Jael, however she pronounces it Jay-el

Which it looks like is incorrect...

"Elisha Elizabeth" or "Simeon Joel" is what i'm leaning toward....

Above poster, is your friend Jewish? All this time, I've been thinking that would be the correct way to pronounce Jael, too.

As far as I know she does not come from a Jewish background, however I'm positive of a Christian background which is most likely how they came to the name and possibly why it isn't using the correct pronunciation.
