Let's talk HERBS.

I'm trying desperately to organize my thoughts on which herbs I should have on hand for my first UC. Unfortunately I'm finding myself overwhelmed...I want to make sure I have some useful tinctures on hand but...?? Dang that Susun Weed book, my head is swimming LOL!!

So I'm wondering, what tinctures have YOU personally used for UC and what do you keep on hand "just in case"?

This is my personal emergency herb list. I gathered it, mostly from "wise womans herbal for the childbearing year." I have this list printed out in my birth kit with all the herbs.

Not to be construed as medical advice.

Herbs
Undelivered Placenta with Heavy Bleeding:

-To cause rapid emptying and clamping of the uterus-
*ANGELICA- 50 drops + BLUE COHOSH- 20 drops under the tongue.

*Repeat every 2-5 minutes if necessary.
******************************************
-To control bleeding until placenta is expelled-
*WITCH HAZEL-10-20 drops of tincture.

*note* Witch Hazel does not help to contract uterus or expel placenta, both of which are needed to control bleeding.
Witch hazel can be used repeatedly to slow bleeding until the placenta is expelled.

Hemorrhage and Placenta is Out:

-Loss of 2 cups or more of blood accompanied by mom feeling dizzy, faint, pale/clammy skin, low body temp. Blood loss could be prolonged and slowly seeping or sudden gushing.

PLACENTA- cut dime sized piece of maternal side and place in cheek or under tongue.

SHEPHERD'S PURSE- 20-40 drops under the tongue.
****To be used ONLY IF PLACENTA IS EXPELLED****

*Repeat every minute as needed.*

Should take effect in 5-30 seconds. If this is not effective- TRANSFER TO HOSPITAL.

SHOCK-iness: -Showing beginning signs of shock
-Large blood loss can lead to feeling "shock-y."
Faint, dizzy, nausea, excessive thirst, excessive weakness, pale/cold/clammy skin and restlessness in the mother.

*These remedies are adequate for "shockiness" but not clinical shock which should be treated at HOSPITAL.**

-Keep mother AWAKE. She should LAY DOWN and ELEVATE LEGS.
-Keep her WARM.
-She may be nervous and restless. REASSURE HER and KEEP HER STILL.

REMEDIES:

-BACH RESCUE REMEDY.....3-4 sprays on the tongue every 5 minutes.

-ARNICA- homeopathic- 5 pellets every 5 minutes

-MOTHERWORT TINCTURE....10 drops under the tongue, *ONCE.*
**Bleeding may be increased by use of repeated doses.**

-ELECTROLYTE STABILIZER
- 1 teaspoon TABLE SALT
- 1/2 teaspoon BAKING SODA
- 4 cups WARM WATER
.............dissolve together..............
OR
-LABORADE, -also electrolyte stabilizer. (if available)

Retained Placenta:

ANGELICA TINCTURE- 30-50 drops under the tongue.

-CATNIP TINCTURE TO PREVENT
-BREASTFEED BABY.
-RASPBERRY LEAF INFUSION.
-EMPTY BLADDER.
-SQUAT AND PUSH.
-TALK ABOUT FEELINGS.

Slow-To-Start Newborn:

-CARBO VEGETABILIS- homeopathic- 1 pellet tucked in cheek.
*repeat every 1-2 minutes*

In past births, I used motherwort tincture afterwards to help with afterpains, but it didn't help me at all. I had Rescue Remedy, but it also did not help me with anxiety or anything during labor or post-partum. I took arnica after the birth and I DO think that helped.

Other than that, I did not have any herbs on hand. I think that in the future, I would probably just have some arnica for post-partum healing. That's about it!

Let's see.. I used a black cohosh/blue cohosh/ blue veverian tincture in strong red raspberry leaf tea during labor to speed things along/ make sure labor didn't slow down or stop.. Bach's rescue remedy right after the delivery because I was really shaky.. Shepards purse tincture after the placenta was delivered, I was bleeding quite a bit, it looked right on the border of a hemmorage, the bleeding stopped nearly instantly after taking the shepards purse.. Then I took a motherwort infusion (chased down with oj) for the afterpains (which were seriously worse than labor itself) The motherwort did wonders for me with the afterpains.. I pretty much ended up using every one of the herbal remedies I had gotten to have on hand.. lol..
