Fanfic, an appreciation and a stroll down memory lane.

An abandoned fan fic is a source of sadness and frustration. Especially when the author swore back in March of '08 that she wasn't finished, there's more coming! blah, blah, blah, and then nothing. No updates. It's been more than a year, now, since one particularly good story on my list was updated. And it's not even the oldest one. There's one that I check periodically that was last updated in December of '05!!!

Why do I keep checking??

To the fan fic library sites, why, oh why, do you keep incomplete stories that haven't been updated in more than a whole frapping year? Why not put them in a separate, abandoned fic archive? Get them out of the general pool of stories? Acknowledge that there are stories that never get finished, and get rid of them! Maybe if the authors knew their stories would be shunted to the dungeon if they didn't finish them, maybe they'd bother to complete their damn stories!

But really, why write 15 chapters of a really great story and then disappear? One author, ONE, in the four years that I've been reading fan fic, actually put out a note of explanation why, when after writing THE BEST fan fic I'd ever read, she pulled it, unfinished. While it was heart breaking to learn that I was never going to learn what happened next, I could really understand and respect that the author's head was in a different place and finishing this story just wasn't a priority anymore.

All the rest of them, no explanation, just abandoned stories. Why not just complete the whole story before you post it? Or at least leave a note: sorry, I'm not writing fan fic anymore, you shouldn't be reading this stuff when you're supposed to be asleep anyway, SOMETHING like that.

And why do I keep checking? : :

==========================================

Edited to reflect the fact that obviously I still have fond feelings for fanfic. Otherwise I wouldn't be grumpy when my favorites didn't get finished.

Plus, yes, the infamous MDC Harry Potter thread of '05 is sorely missed, even after all this time.

I feel your pain. What's almost as bad is when someone deletes their work. I've been searching for this one fic for 2 years now, going through every possible link and search and thread and site on a wild goose chase. I finally pieced together the first 19 chapters but cannot find the last two.

Still, I search.

See, this is why I hardly read fanfic anymore. The disappointment is too great to bear! (hear the melodrama?) One particularly nice story is still floating around out in the ether, loose ends flapping in the breeze. Oh well, at least ONE author finally came back to finish her tale...FOUR YEARS LATER! Talk about a cliff hanger.

Well, this inspired me to at least go back and read what I wrote (three years ago!) Maybe I'll finish it.

I did finally read the last chapter of a fic 2 months ago. I had bugged the author again and again and she finally posted the final chap more than a year later. It was worth it.

Some fics I still am waiting... and are so good I'll probably continue waiting.

That makes me feel better! I have been periodically checking on one fanfic that was right at climax and she didn't finish the LAST CHAPTER!! Ahhh!!!

Krystal323-don't feel bad, I unashamedly love Harry Potter fanfic. I am actually writing a nice big fat one. Well, truthfully, it was one I started after book 4 came out, so it's an alternate timeline, etc. But I never put it on the interwebs to torment everyone else that may have liked it.

LMAO - I was referencing the R/Hr aspect. Seriously, you are talking to the queen of HP fan fiction!

I've been in too many shipping wars... my poor heart... I don't know if it can take anymore...

Okay, gotta be true : H/Hr - DUH.

I'd rather eat glass than read a R/Hr fic, LOL.
okay, y'all. what is fanfic? : i guess i'll google it, just thought i'd get someone here to explain so it'll be in the thread for all posterity!

I guess as a moderator, it would be very wrong for me to start a Sharks and Jets thing among shippers.

Fascinating, though. I don't think I've ever met a H/Hr shipper "in real life". Although I have met my share of Trio shippers. Maybe that's where we all can find common ground.
