BG 3.0's: What am I doing wrong????

Hi everyone, looking for some advice here. We're relatively new to cloth, we tried a few different kinds before settling on BG 3.0's and overall we're pretty happy with them. We've been using them for about 5-6 weeks now, and we've been running into some hitches lately.

First, about three weeks ago they became quite leaky. I consulted the BG website and several boards and stripped our dipes using original blue dawn and several rinses, as per instructions on the site and forums. This solved the leaking problem, except overnight. I've been stuffing them to the max and my son still pee's through, which I guess is to be expected, to some degree, since he drinks alot. But the past few nights he's been waking up soaked and angry at least twice, and changing his diaper and clothes twice a night seems a bit excessive to me.
Also, he's developed quite the diaper rash, just red and sore. I haven't changed detergents and I'm doing two washes, two rinses as per the instructions. Not sure what's going on.

Any ideas/suggestions?
TIA!

When he's leaking at night, is whatever you are stuffing with completely soaked? If it is, then you need to adjust what you're stuffing with. If it ISN'T soaked, then it is the bg's. I've found that 9 times out of 10, the leaks are from the inserts being soaked, not the diaper itself.

If you have diaper rash, the first step to solving that is changing more often, and having some diaperless periods. It's probably from being soaked at night, would be my guess.

Out of curiosity, why are you washing twice? One wash should be sufficient.

Thanks for that, I'll check the inserts next time, see how wet they are. He's getting lots of diaper-free time, and it almost seems worst in the afternoon/evening... I'm at a bit of a loss, really. Just crossing my fingers it doesn't get yeast-y.

The instructions on the dipes read : " wash cold-wash hot-double rinse-dry warm". I only use detergent in the cold wash though.

Most people just do a rinse cycle first, and then a hot wash (and put in detergent here) with one or two rinses. I don't think there's really a need to put them through a whole cold wash cycle.

And if you line dry them, the elastic will last longer.

But yes, definitely check and see if the insert is actually soaked, or if it's just his clothes. That will help you determine which part of it is the problem.

I've used plain cornstarch on my kids' bottoms when they get red. (No idea if that will help his situation, but it did help us.)

Hopefully it will be an easy fix with the inserts.

Also, if you do dry the BGs (or any diaper with elastic) make sure you wait till they are cool to stuff them, as stretching out the warm elastic will make it lose some of the elasticity and then the fit won't be as snug.

First make sure your fit is good around the legs. Position his penis so its not sticking up when you diaper hime. Use a micro and hemp insert and then we use a cover at night. Like a onesize wonder wrap. We don't have any leaks. Also hemp needs to be washed about 7 times before it reaches its full aborbancy. Hope this helps.
