Rule of St Benedict anyone? Christian/Catholic not required

To be completely upfront, I am not Catholic. I am not even 100% sure I am anything except "just me" but I have always been drawn to learning about various religions and their beliefs. I have actually always been very heavily drawn to the monastic way of life, especially their works of service and time for contemplation. I really think that the Rule would fit in very well with many of the beliefs held here on MDC and would be interested to see what everyone's opinion is. It is super short (my copy is a whopping 95 3inch by 5 inch pages) and even my little hole in the wall library had like 2 copies a few years ago when I first tried to read my way through it. I would love it if a few mommas would like to read their way through it with me. It is very easy to squeeze in a little bit each day ( even the real Benedictines read it in tiny chunks so they read it 3 times a year) We could draw it out as long as you guys wanted by actually reading only the chunks that they would read, or we can read a chapter or two a day however you would like. I would just really love to have some mommas to reflect on this with. And as the title says, your religious preference doesn't matter... I would love to see how other non catholics like myself interpret the ideas.

Crossing my fingers that you mommas are out there!

If you mean that there must be no true evil in the world if people are still corruptible then I am in.

I love the Rule of St. Benedict. I have gone on a couple of unstructured retreats at a Benedictine monastery (before kiddos). Here are a couple of aspects I love that I think can appeal to anyone:

1. Stability- the idea that it's good for us to live and work in one place our whole lives, bearing with each other and taking the good with the bad. It's too easy to run away in the modern world, IMO.

2. Balance- The Rule calls for work and prayer and play in a rhythm that seems suited to our human condition.

3. Manual work- Working with our hands, whether farming or art or whatever, seems to calm our minds, too.

Those are the three that pop to mind.

I am very interested! I will work on trying to find a copy. I'm sure my family's church has one they would lend to me. I have been on a retreat to a Benedictine monasory when I was younger. It was a very spiritual experience for me

Rule of St. Benedict

I went to a Benedictine boarding school for high school and loved how peaceful it was. It was run by Benedictine nuns but I liked how they lived. I have that little book also. I need to look at it again.

Have you visited ?

St. Meinrad is beautiful to visit in Indiana. Have you ever gone to a place like this ? I like the Trappist place in Bardstown KY also. I think just walking the grounds is peaceful. I live pretty close to both which is nice.

Im actually in WV and was pleasantly surprised by the number of close, well within a day of driving, monasteries (WHY DOES KY HAVE SOOOOOO MANY?) but unfortunately I have a hard time getting away with school, babe, soon to be work again, and no family nearby... hopefully one day soon....

As for everyone else, I think I bought my copy on Amazon for a penny plus shipping in the used and new section... if you look for someone in a state near you you may pay like 10 cents more, but will probably get it like 4 times as fast.

I'm sooooo excited to see that there is interest... I LUUURRRVVVEEE MDC....

I really think the rule is such a beautiful approach to life.... well most of it ( I must admit I am not a fan of the chapter on "the manner of reproving boys" but I have no doubt that that will give us something to discuss here...

I think if nothing else, the world would be a much better place if we all just followed Benedict's teaching about never harboring ill feelings towards someone past sundown. That is a beautiful thought.
