Peggy O' Mara's response to the Atlantic article

Case Closed: Breast Is Best
Quote:
Hanna Rosin's article exposes the dichotomy between the high value we place on breastfeeding and the low value we place on mothering, but it is cowardly to blame breastfeeding. Slandering breastfeeding because our society makes it inconvenient is like vacillating on equal pay for women because it's difficult to achieve.

This is no time to waver: Powerful economic and political forces are continually undermining breastfeeding progress. Surely, we need state and federal protections for breastfeeding—that's a given. To achieve our national health goals, we—like our sisters around the world—also need guaranteed health care, paid family leaves, and caregiving credits. Bottle-feeding is an old-school feminist solution to inequality. The equal-rights arena of today is breastfeeding.

Great answer... The thing that really irks me though is all the attention this is getting. : I hadn't even heard of Hanna Rosin before.

Those paragraphs are awesome!! :

The whole article just outlines my sadness for the poor state our country is in in regards to rights for women and such though.

It is discouraging how much attention the Rosin article is getting. I even read someone comment about this "great new study proving how formula is just as good as BFIng." Where? The Atlantic, of course.

Oh, I know. It's one ofthe reasons I haven't written a reply to it on my blog; I have no desire to give it yet more airtime. :

I'm still glad Peggy refuted her so eloquently and compassionately, though.

I feel this way too--she was on my favorite NPR program today--BARF! My mom called and said "you have to turn on NPR--they're talking about breastfeeding!" The interviewer fawned all over her, agreed with everything she said without question, and did not challenge her at all. I was so disappointed

NPR did that?? Um, I want my pledge money back, please.

as peggy quite eloquenty pointed out the rosin woman is fighting the wrong battle. she actually presents a fairly weak argument but since this is one of those emotional subjects people who want validation for choosing to ff will find that in her article regardless of the obvious flaws.

oo also i want to move to the crazy alternate dimension she seems to live in where everyones a lactavvist ... that has not been my experience.

YES. It totally makes me wonder if she evens mean any of it. This just smells to high heaven of sensationalist journalism for its own sake.
