What should I know before I henna my hair?

First - an apology, I know there is lots of henna stuff already posted, but I'm at work and super busy and unable to search to find it all.

I have quite dark brown, curly hair. I have some old store bought dye (loreal or something) that is about half grown out that is sort of a reddish/orange/brown tint, and the part that is growing out is dark brown mixed with gray that I am wanting to cover.

I bought a box of the henna with the fox on it (Light Mountain maybe?) at Whole Foods and when I got home read the instructions and got a little intimidated, and then searched and found some threads on here that REALLY got me nervous. Now I wonder, should I even do it since I still have some old dye in my hair (from maybe 3-4 months ago).

I feel that since my hair is so dark, I probably won't get any kind of super crazy color change, but I do fear my hair burning off or falling out or some such debacle. Anybody have any advice before I go to tackle this head in a couple weeks?

My sister's a colorist and she has always gotton on me for using it sooo long ago, I guess it stays on the folicle and makes dye, henna and artificial dyes really hard to color. She's always says it's a no-go as far as the long term if you will go back to coloring your hair...just another thought...

it is PERMANENT. you cannot color or bleach over it.
