Need music for 8.5 year old DD

Thread Starter
Hi,

I desperately need suggestions for 8 year old daughter's music collection. We have not purchased music since We Sing cassette tapes for the car (OMG!). We have an iPod (but no iPod player currently). I am willing to purchase songs from iTunes. She is open to any kind of music, but I want to get away from the "too babyish" stuff we have! Help, please! : )

Hmmm, at 8 they are often open to a lot of music. Do you have a music collection she can thumb through so at least you can see her style?

My 8 yo loves the Beatles, but also goes crazy over Weird Al songs. He likes things with a definite beat too, so I suggest that type for him. My other son likes calmer music.

My dd1 is only 7, but she likes a pretty wide variety of music. She particularly loves show tunes, but is also fond of ABBA, some light country, and anything really sarcastic. She also likes to listen to good audiobooks.

They Might Be Giants. Their albums for kids are practically indistinguishable from their albums for adults!

Hey, and what about the classics? You could try Peter and the Wolf (Prokoffiev - or whatever the spelling in English; my children all loved it), The four Seasons (Vivaldi), The Nutcracker (Tchaikovsky), The Moldow (Smetana).

Both of these! My daughter loves TMBG, and she's really getting into some great classical stuff.

The Curious George soundtrack by Jack Johnson is really nice. Very mainstream pop sounding, but the songs are kid-appropriate.

I'm also a big fan of Justin Roberts. His target audience is a bit younger, but he's on my personal ipod.

My dd (7) likes tons of different stuff. Jack Johnson is a favorite here. She loves to listen to the radio and one of her new discoveries is Cindy Lauper. I LOVED Cindy when I was young and it's so cute to hear her singing in her room. :

I tried to get her listen to Bob Dylan but she thought that was really bad music and couldn't listen to that anymore.

The Beatles
The Monkees
The Mamas and The Papas
Blondie (but not ALL of her songs. She has a few that wouldn't be appropriate.)
Polyphonic Spree
The Beach Boys
Movie/Musical Soundtracks of things she likes
Those Kidz Bop cds that have popular Top 40 songs remixed for children (I used to teach an after-school-care class for 6 to 10 year olds and they all loved these.)

my 9 yo dd likes Sonic Youth, Garbage, Katy Perry, Heart, Pink, Gwen Stefani-any strong female voice with heavy guitar or beat. I doublecheck the lyric content and purchase the non-explicit versions.

My 8 year old likes The Ramones. Virtually none of their songs have any bad words--he gets it that some of the lyrics are meant to be funny and there are some songs my husband plays guitar with and sings to first graders like Rockaway Beach. Ds also likes Cheap Trick but these you have to check the lyrics. We listen to the White Stripes, too.

For kids music that is also simply great music, I recommend Dan Zanes:
http://www.danzanes.com/nighttime/nighttime.shtml

and The Terrible Twos:
http://www.amazon.com/If-You-Ever-Se...9828771&sr=8-2
http://www.amazon.com/Jerzy-Giant-Te...ref=pd_sim_m_1

We also like the comp CD:
http://www.amazon.com/Bottle-Let-Me-...9828957&sr=1-1
Actually, we *love* this CD.

I listen to these four CDs even when the kids aren't around. The music is that good.

: We might as well enjoy the same music now! My DD's liked 'Bon Jobi' since she was tiny! Also Indigo Girls, Keith Urban. Putamayo has some great CD's also.

Have fun!
