Finally taking 7 yr old to allergist today - pls help me

My 7 yr old Allison:

RSV at age four WEEKS old - hospitalized 4 days.
To the ER several times w/retractions (bad asthma attack).
Finally diagnosed w/asthma at age 2.5. Has been on oral steroids 3 or 4 times in her life.

When we found a new home for our cat, her asthma symptoms became more manageable. We now know she is allergic to cats, and possibly dogs. Her only known trigger is illness (a cold).

She was partially vax (next two kids never vax).

Severe, severe constipation starting at age 5 months.

As a baby had very minor eczema, no more than 3 or 4 dry patches at a time, usually smaller than my finger nail.

She was 8 lbs 12 oz at birth (42 weeks) but had poor weight gain as a baby/child. Was just told she is clinically failure to thrive, she is still small. Her pulmonologist even tested her for CP because of the weight gain.

Breastfed for 3.5 years, even at night, unlimited.

In Dec and Jan she had bowel impactions, to the point where she was throwing up in Jan. Dec saw an MD (why? . In Jan saw a chiro who does energy work.

Has been on digestive enzymes, then crystal testing told me "No". I did just get kids digest (enzymedica) for her.

Started complaining of frequent stomach aches about 2 years ago. She identified chocolate as the culprit, but I'm actually starting to suspect corn. she can eat "Enjoy Life" chocolate chips and not get a stomach ache.

At age 6 she had baseline testing done and it was found that at baseline, she has poor lung capacity. Now she is on daily inhaled steroids.

Now, because little sis reacts to: gluten, diary, nightshade, corn, soy, eggs and peas, I wonder if food could be contributing to Allison's cronic bronchial inflamation.

So she is finally going to an allergist (a doc who specialize in allergies AND asthma) today. This is the same doc I took my little one to last summer. I had made the appt weeks before and by the time we got to the appt, she was finally starting to improve. But the guy was great, told me about intolerances, gave me an epi prescription and had the nurse show me how to use the syringe.

So what should we ask for?

I want to ask for test for poor absorption - WHAT IS THAT TEST????
I want to ask how we could test for intolerances - ALCAT????

What else? So hard w/poor lung functioning. W/the eczema, I could get fairly quick feedback. It seemed so difficult at the time, but now looks easy to figure out the eczema compared to the astham.

TIA,
Tracy

Anyone w/any suggestions? anyone w/asthma as well as food allergies and had their asthma improve when they identified foods they were sensitive to?

I believe ALCAT is an intolerance test, yes, as is ELISA. The problem with testing in someone who has asthma (assuming she's on inhaled steroids, ie Flovent, Flomax, Advair), is that the preventative medicines generally interfere with getting appropriate test results.
For myself, when I went dairy free I noticed a HUGE difference in my asthma symptoms. DS1's asthma seems to be completely dairy related, but his dairy allergy is IgE mediated (mine's IgG).

I am allergic to dairy as well and I have noticed a slight improvement in symptoms since going dairy free.

I got some letter from my allergist's office before my appointment and it mentioned something about not taking meds five days before??

Well so I get there and I am in COMPLETE ALLERGY MELTDOWN. The allergist was NOT HAPPY and made me take meds and use an inhaler right in front of them.

Just saw this. I hope it went well. Post an update when you get a chance. We're heading to the allergist tomorrow for a follow up for dd. It's been almost 2.5 yrs since she's been re-tested.

Tracy, I hope your appt went well and you can start getting some answers that you need and that your DD feels better soon.

I have a ? about this. Is it also true if the nursing mother is taking Advair (steroid inhaler) daily? Do you have more info to back this up? NOTHING showed on DS's ELISA tests for wheat/gluten but he obviously still has a wheat problem and oats too. Thanks!

When DD1 got allergy testing, they said she had to be off antihistamines for 5 days before the testing. I don't remember them saying about any other drugs to be off of....

Just the handout my allergist gave me when DS1 and I went for testing. He said that, although these drugs can effect the results, they do NOT recommend going off of them.
