There are really helpful and clear instructions in the book Stitch N Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker. A chart even on pg. 43. It's actually a little different for different kinds of stitches. Can you get a copy of that book at your library?

This book is fantastic. I've crocheted since I was a little girl, and even I loved this book when I saw it.
