Carrier recommendations for a big baby please!

DS is 5 months old and about 24lbs and 28". I have a maya wrap, Moby and a New Native. The maya is in the car for quick carrying, etc. The moby for longer stuff and the NN is kind of useless(luckily my friend only paid 50cents for it) I love the moby and it still works. I don't like wearing it when he is not in it and all the fabric is a pita. He is starting to sit up. So, I know this should get easier, but what do you all recommend and why? I would like something that balances the weight and is easy to get on and off.

my dd is not quite that big, but i love my Ergo. My sister still uses hers with her almost 2 year old.

I forgot to add, that I tried a Kelty front carrier with dd about 4 years ago and hated it. It killed my shoulders. I know that isn't really in this realm. But when I look at a becco or an ergo I wonder if I will have the same issue.

My DD is 17 months and about 25 pounds, and I still occasionally use my sling but mostly she's in the Ergo. It's SO comfortable - I can carry her for quite long pieriods, both on the back and front. I'd recommend it for sure.

I don't know what the kelty front carrier looks like but if it's closer to the Bjorn or Snuggli, then yes, there is a big difference. Main reason for the difference is that Beco and Ergo are not only 2-shoulder carriers but they also have a structured waist belt which helps distribute the weight evenly between shoulders and hips.

I think Ergo is more up your alley because it can be easier to use with quick on and off. Now, the only concern is the short body. You can look into an AngelPack or Olives and Applesauce 16" full buckle carrier for that convenience. There is a bit of a learning curve with the hip scoot or toss method for back carrying. But it's fairly easy to master after a few tries. There are also great videos out there to make it less intimidating.

The Beco Butterfly does have an inner panel in which the baby is sandwiched between in the carrier. So you can unbuckle waist and transfer baby to another wearer without having to take baby out. For back carrying, baby is already securely buckled into the carrier, the hip scoot method is super easy to master.

Have you tried using the NN as a hip carrier? I STILL use it for my daughter who is almost 4. I just rest her butt on the whole thing (not inside the pouch) and sort of keep one hand on her back. It works GREAT and is faster and easier than anything else I have tried. We have used it for long walks, farmers markets, airports etc.

I thought Kelty only made back carriers? Where do yo find front ones? (Since you gave such a glowing recommendation and all. )

You need a sturdy, non stretchy, 2 shouldered carrier. I like woven wraps for versatility, but a good soft structured carrier, like a mei tai or an Ergo would be more user friendly.

I'd try a Beco, Ergo or Babyhawk. I have all three and can comfortably carry my 30 lb 2 yo.

Never tried a kelty but I imagine it doesn't transfer the weight to your hips like a good quality soft-structured carrier or Mei Tai does.

Thanks for posting this. I'm in the same boat & I'm finding the moby & ring sling are not as great for longer periods.

Bamberoo has much wider straps about 3 1/2 inches i think, and more padded, a much bigger body of the carrier, and a more padded waits, and they have hoods. But they are much harder to get ahold of, although there are a few instock at the moment, and they are a bit more $$$.


BH are better for smaller babies, the are more compact, and not as overwhelming because the bamberoos are alot of fabric. but BH are not as comfy with a older kid, and there is no hood, only a headrest.

I believe the straps on a BH are about 3 inches or maybe 2 1/2 wide, where the bamberoo are almost 4 inches (if not 4 completely) which makes carrying a larger baby or toddler much more comfy, and the waist is different, Bamberoos have a wider waist, and its more padded than a BH.

I have been using an Ergo the last couple days and it is ok. I think I need to tighten the straps some more as they seem to want to fall down. Also, I feel like he will grow out of this quickly meaning the fabric that covers the body. Has anyone else run into this issue?

I don't really know why the height of the carrier would be a problem. I still use the Ergo with my 42+ inch 4-year-old. I'm trying to remember when I last used the sleeping hood with my 2-year-old; I think it was when he was about 35 inches tall.

Regarding the straps falling down, are you using it on your front or your back? If you're using it on the front, you need to fasten the chest clip behind your back to keep the straps up. It's much more comfortable that way.

Oh, and I like the Ergo much better as a back carrier than a front carrier.

yes the ergo has the shortest body of all sscs. i like my pikkolo.
