ahh, okay, thanks... I guess that's why I haven't had any problems. I actually did try to add water to get a better consistancy but since I wasn't using an emulsifier, I guess, that didn't work at all!

On the preservative front, for your own use you can make very small batches, store them in the fridge, and use for like a week or two without things going bad, especially with essential oils that are a little antimicrobial in there to help out.

Or make a big batch and add a bit of Germaben so it'll keep for months on end.

I make salves and they come out sort of like lotion bars, slightly softer. I've been looking for a creamy consistency also.

I wonder if the creamy consistency comes from blending the ingredients so that air happens in there. I don't have a blender though, so can't say for sure.

This is one thing I'd like a good answer to myself.

Stick blenders are great for making toiletries, and can be found pretty cheaply (I think ours cost $10?). But you'd have to blend again after it cooled down all the way to really whip some air into it.
