Kick in the pants please! Lol

Ok, DH and I have decided to cloth diaper this new babe on the way. I have read soooo much and done tons of research and from what I am reading PF and covers are the way to go. I just am a little worried about how good they will work for absorbing Brest milk poop? If I do the PF in 3rds and lay them in my covers is that going to absorb ok? THats my one concern. And i would prefer not to use snappi's or pins so if I just lay them in the covers is that a bad idea?
I would really like to just use AIO's but I am scared by all the people saying they leak.

I find that I prefer fitteds for the newborn stage as they comtain everything the best, then prefolds for later on. That being said I have never had an issue with my AIOs or pockets leaking as long as they fit correctly!! My advice would be to get a little of everything at first so you can see what you like and what works for your baby's shape. Cloth really is fun once you get into it!!

I have one friend locally who has CD'ed for YEARS and she said that with all of her children, she never used pins or snappis. From the get-go she would simply trifold the prefold and then she like Bummis covers to hold it all in. She said she preferred having lots of covers (7-10) so that she didn't have to worry about whether or not poop got on the cover than dealing with snappis/pins. So, yes, it seems that you can do that!

Another vote for pockets here. I love them. But you do have to have them fit well. I've heard that x-small fuzzi bunz fit newborns very well.

Personally I would use a snappi with a breastfeed baby. They have major exploive poos. You get such a more custom fit when you can hold the diaper snug against baby. I have tried everal times to not use pins or snappi and I end up changing baby twice as often bc diaper is slipping or clothes get wet...

For newborns I have heard kissaluvs size 0 are perfect.

Pins take a little practice and it took me about two months to realize you dont have to go through all the layers of cloth just enough to snag the bottom layer and since then I have not poked baby.

Snappis are "idiot proof" and I have only had one mishapp that involved me getting my finger torn on the edging. I have never had them tear a diaper either.

At this point I would suggest to stop reading, buy a little of each type and figure out what best fits your needs and taste and not a whole stash of one kind. Following what everyone else does will make your head explode.

Enjoy it, know that what you think are the best choices will not be and what you don't expect to be the best selections may totally surprise you.

Its hard to cover all the needs until you really get a good look at the custom model soon to arrive.

Personally -- I love my pins and prefolds & fitteds -- 19 years ago, 9 years ago and 8 years ago. They are classic.

Just laying the prefold in the Bummi cover worked when she was new.

Later I used snappis to help keep it more in place because she started getting more mobile.

She was EBF to 6 mos and BF well beyond that and we had no problem with the prefolds absorbing breast milk poo.

The poo itself changers as the baby's digestive system matures along with the baby. If I had to describe it, it was sort of like melty peanut butter at first, and then room temperature peanut butter and eventually like little versions of adult poo.

HTH!

A lot of sites will do a newborn diaper rental kit. You'll get a little of everything and you can send it back and buy what you like. I love this idea for that first 8 wks and when you are just starting to CD. You never know what you are going to like.

Thanks everyone! Do you think it would be dumb to get just 1 dozen prefolds and a few covers and then use some AIO's that I will be getting? Is it silly to just get 1 dozen prefolds or should I get 2 since I am getting them? Does Thirsties and bummi's covers and PF's bulkier than a AIO?

How is this for a stash??? Anyone?

10 AIO’s In newborn from WAHM $70 + 1
Free 10 AIO’s In Small from WAHM $70 + 1 FREE 4 AIO’s In newborn from another WAHM $27.00 4 AIO’s In Small from another WAHM $35.96 1 dozen PFs IN Newborn $21.00 1 dozen PFs In Small $25.00 3 Covers In Newborn from Thirsties $33.75 3 Covers In Small from Thirsties $33.75
Total of $315.00

Then I would Add Medium sizes later once I figured out if I like all the dipes. . . . .
10 AIO’s In Medium from QTbuns $70 + 1 FREE 1 Dozen PFs In Medium $27.00 3 Covers In Medium from Thirsties $33.75

TOTAL $130.75

So for about $450 I will have diapers for the first 9 months give or take a little depending how big baby is. . . .

I would hold off on buying anymore newborn or small diapers.

My neice is very little but at 8 month we have not graduated to her medium happy heineys yet....

Prefold are great to have around even if you dont use them on the hiney. Spit up, nasty nose, diaper pad, spilled water.....

so you don't need to wrap the pf around the hips? I pictured maybe not using pins or snappis at first but also envisioned folding the pf around my baby as if I would pin or snappi, but just put the cover on instead.

Hi there

Your diaper stash sounds great but I would try some different covers. Everyone seems to love the Thirsties but I found that they leak through. We use imse vimse organic covers, a much better fit for the poo-explosions IMO, and we LOVE Sugar Pease fleece covers (we've never had a leak ever!), plus the fleece is so cozy on the newborn bottom and around those little legs.

Have you looked at diaperswappers.com yet? For a newborn especially you can get second-hand diapers that haven't been used (if that turns you off) from moms who received them for baby showers, etc and just want someone to take them off their hands. Then you can try different things and see what you like. I am a big fitted fan myself, I noticed you don't have any of those on your list. We use fitteds and prefolds. It just got so boring to change a zillion prefolds with the newborn, so we changed it up a bit and bought some kissaluvs, swaddlesbees, mutts and cloth-diaper-mamas.

happy diapering!

I have looked on Diaper swappers! I am in the midst of buying some PFs and BG dipes off of there!
Right now I have for around $400 these. . . . . (I dont have them all bought yet, just in the midst of bartering. . lol)

Newborn size
15 AIO's from a WAHM
1 Dozen PFs from Green mountain
2 Thirsties covers
I am going to get another Cover in another brand as some of you suggested in case thirsties dont work for me. Also Im not plannin on using cloth the first week or so due to not wanting to do laundry. So I didnt want to buy a bunch of newborn dipes especially if the baby is big then they will be out of the fast!

Small Size
15 AIO's from a WAHM
1 BG 3.0 Dipe
1 Dozen PFs from Green mountain
2 Thirsties covers
I will be getting another cover in this size also and maybe some more AIO dipes if I can find some used.

Medium Size
10 AIO's from a WAHM
I am not plannin to buy anymore in this size til baby is closer to this size that way I know what I want to use by then as far as AIO's full time or PFs and covers. . . etc.

So how is that for around $400? I am getting all these dipes in neutral colors too so that we can use them for the next baby. Especially the newborn sizes that wont get as used as long. 27 newborn dipes, 28 Small dipes?
