(posted this same message on good eating, then thought i shouldve posted it here instead... sorry, mods)

nak

been trying to cut down on spicy fooods since ds was born (4 wks ago). but a few hrs ago my neighbor brought me homemade kimchee! (if you dont know, thats korean pickled cabbage, very spicy, yummmm) i could not take just a couple bites, nope, i pigged out. will ds be miserable all night w/ gas? is there anything i can do now to mitigate the damage?

(and i have a take-home final exam tomorrow so it will suck if i dont sleep tonight... doh.)

ps - it was delicious, almost asgood as my step-grandmas!

don't know about the kimchee, but if the baby is gassy, have mylicon (simethicone) drops on hand if you don't already. Also, warm cloths to the tummy seemed to help my dd when she was unhappy with gas. who knows, you could escape without the gassy baby!

If you've been eating spicy foods all along and haven't noticed him having difficulties, I doubt this will cause any problems either, at least not from spiciness. Cabbage itself can cause some babies problems, but not all.

Moms in cultures that eat spicy foods don' t stop doing so that I've heard.

Put him in flame proof diapers and enjoy?

hey you're right, we both slept just fine that night. even a korean mama friend told me to cut back, but i guess it's an old wives tale about the spicy foods. whoohoo!

I'm glad all went well for you both.

Somewhere along the line I'd read that in cultures that eat lots of spicy foods they don't particularly change their diet when pregnant or nursing. Babies get used to what they were formed on I think.

I had also just watched the episode of M*A*S*H in which Hawkeye spends the afternoon and evening with a Korean family after crashing his jeep avoiding hitting their kids. When he gets his first taste of supper he tells the pregnant one that her baby is going to need asbestos diapers.:LOL
