If you have an EIN #...

For those of you with EIN #'s---do you need to be registered with the state as a business, and if so, is this process complicated. Fried brain here...

Thanks in Advance!

This is likely to vary by state. I have an EIN and a LLC but I am not a registered business - the state doesn't require writers that don't employ others or use a sales tax exemption to be licensed as a business.

I don't have a state license. My business is all done in my name so it's not required here. If I were to call myself something other than my legal name, I'd be required. But each state has different rules. Usually a state license is super easy. I've owned businesses in 3 different states, granted it's only 1.5% of the country, but I feel fairly confident saying that a state business license isn't a complicated pursuit.

If I may add a related question: If a writer were to use a pseudonym, would they then be required to file a DBA or anything of that sort?

probably only if you plan to receive checks in that name.

That makes sense. Thank you!
