EAST LANSING, Mich. — A Michigan State University researcher has developed a working vaccine for a strain of E. coli that kills 2 million to 3 million children each year in the developing world.

Enterotoxigenic E. Coli, which is responsible for 60 percent to 70 percent of all E. coli diarrheal disease, also causes health problems for U.S. troops serving overseas and is responsible for what is commonly called traveler’s diarrhea.

I worry about vaccines targeting bacterial infections. We've seen the rise of bacterial superbugs, which vaccines may be partly responsible for (HiB, Pc). In theory this e. coli vax sounds nice, but there are already resistant strains of e. coli out there. Do we really want to mess around with this? Maybe we should spend more time and money on cleaning up food processing and agricultural contamination.

Clean water around the world would be helpful too.

Stopping it at it's source would be best via clean food and water, rather than yet another vax.

Great, now we'll have radiated food AND vaccinated kids. I guess we're all covered then!
