I just went and checked out the Thorne site for you, whoMe (did I mention I'm avoiding my to do list? ). The best you'll find in a multi from them is 500 mcg 5-MTHF with 500 mcg calcium folinate (aka folinic acid)- which is what's in their prenatal, btw.
However!
They also have this folate supp: 1000mcg of the 5-MTHF form. You have to be a HCP to order from their site () but I thought you might be interested in that anyway so maybe you could search for it elsewhere.

I also thought some others might be interested in checking out their Detox formula.
Oh, and for those who may need to "kick start" their methylation cycle, there's this.

So do you think either of these might be good for some of us?

The links didn't work for me, but now you got me finally searching the site

To clarify: The conversion to folinic acid is not what trips most people up but somewhere from folinic acid to 5-MTHF, correct? I believe there is another mutation I was reading out which does trip up the conversion to folinic acid though...
I'm looking it up...
Folinic acid isn't a normal intermediate between folic acid and folate. It's more of a side thing that has to do with purine metabolism. The two *can* be converted to each other, but you don't have to go through one to get the other.

If you were taking all folinic acid, it wouldn't help the MTHFR issues. I'm sure there are mutations that affect every enzyme involved in the whole process, but the MTHFR one seems like it's the one to worry about - possibly just because it's that much more common?

I think the methylation formula may be helpful to some. I can't say for sure about the detox formula- there are a couple of things in it that I find questionable (ie R-Lipoic Acid).
If someone else checks out those links, let me know if they don't work for you so I can fix them.

I am officially lazy today.
All I got done was 2 loads of laundry and vacuuming the corner room and I don't wanna cook.
Yay for (almost completely) successfully avoiding my to do list!

Re Thorne products

I'm liking the basic b complex and the basic prenatal right now. I just need to decide if I want a multi or just the B's. I'm leaning towards the B's. I don't like too many vitamins

I don't know if this will weigh in your decision or not and not sure if you noticed, but the Basic Prenatal dosage is 3 capsules.

Yeah, I saw that. It's part of why I'm leaning towards the B's

Searching google, I came across this clinic that's local! I think I'll see if I can buy in person without actually getting a consultation, and keep them in mind if I get stumped and have significant extra $$ floating around...

I found this website online that sells Thorne and they are having a 20% off sale right now:

http://catalog.naturamart.com/thorne...roductlist.php

Probably won't make up the cost of shipping unless you are ordering a lot.

WhoMe can you link to the two vits you are liking at the moment?

Wow, you're far away. For some reason, I thought you were closer than that!

I also find the R-lipoic acid, um, really take it with caution. R-ALA is a stronger version of ALA, it's been more refined so that it's more biochemically active. I think, sometime in the next year, I might work my way up to taking some R-ALA, but not now. Again, I vote no one nursing or pregnant should take it, and I'd want to make sure I had my detox pathways well-supported (and you're not very toxic) before starting with this.

As Chlobo mentioned, there are places to buy online. I'm getting some 30mg zinc picolinate this weekend (well, I'm going to order tonight, and probably get more biotin as well, they have an 8mg biotin product). I'm going to try the picolinate with the kids for a while and see if I notice any changes.

We need to get a list of links to source websites and stuff for kortner's supplement thread, to help with people needing folate instead of folic acid and all this other stuff. This could be really very useful!

Oh--and mtn.mama, I think you're the one who originally posted the link to the migraine-MTHFR study, I already had need to pass it on to a friend, we talked just last week and the subject of migraines only came up because she had one while I was there, and when she felt a bit better, we chatted. She thought the link was very cool, and I'm hoping as she does more reading and decides what to try, that this may work for her.

Cool link + 20% off. I'm ordering their childrens nutrients formula. It comes in a capsule that you can empty and put on food! Seems worth a try...

If the links work:

Basic B Complex
Basic Prenatal

I'm in silicon valley. Not toooo far from oregon - where were you thinking I was?

I know you saw, but in case anyone else didn't, I posted new reading in the copper thread that picolinate might not be everything it's cracked up to be Basically, it's more easily absorbed but also more easily excreted.

That's the prenatal I take, btw. (I think it's the only one they make, so I guess that should be rather obvious.)

I thought you were a little farther north. I guess I didn't realize how far south silicon valley is.

Is this a Thorne Product? Can you link to it? I'm looking for something for Adam & Isabella

I did see that. So is there any consensus on which form of zinc best balances absorption and excretion?
Why o Why does the prenatal need to contain copper? I have plenty, thank you.

I saw it, but I think it's time I experiment. Thing is--I think my daughter's chewing her nails/putting stuff in her mouth (low-level, but she's 5yo) is zinc-related. Worst case, the picolinate is less well-absorbed than the citrate I'm using, and that worsens. Or maybe there's no discernible change, but possibly it'll lessen. I can't tell if I should just accept that, like Cutler says, if you've got mercury issues, it's gonna take forever and a day of high-dose supplementing to get back to okay for zinc, or if I should try to do better. I'm at the point of wanting to try, the downside doesn't seem horrible and the upside is pretty good.

Let me know how that goes. I'm on citrate presently as well.
