Once I break the cycle and quit the carbs cold turkey, it takes me a few days, I literally go through withdrawal, but as long as I make sure to get enough fat and protein, then after about 3 days, I am good, and I feel better, no cravings, etc. But as soon as I begin to introduce the carbs back in (I am talking even just in the form of fruits and vegs) I start the cravings again and being hungry ALL the time. Which is where I am right now. I am starving all the time.:

I do think I probably have low serotonin, except for the glaring fact that actually eating more carbs in response to the cravings makes me feel worse, and crave them even more.

Tryptophan is the precursor for serotonin. But you have to turn tryptophan into 5HTP first, right? Some recommend taking 5HTP as a supplement for various things like depression. So I wonder what the body needs to be able to turn tyrptophan into 5HTP to make serotonin?

I don't have depression, and have never really struggled with that. But I definitely have other symptoms of low serotonin, but maybe it's not low serotonin and it's something else instead.

Maybe it's a blood sugar thing?

If you google serotonin metabolism and look at images, you might get some good stuff. I'd do it, but dd is climbing on my while I type

I was just reading about this. If you take 5HTP, make sure you also have B6. That is needed for the conversion from 5-htp to serotonin

I was just looking online at a Masters in Nutrition and it said to be licensed I would need 1000 hours of clinical work. Shouldn't this count as clinical work? Or Education credits? Or something?

BH4 is needed to turn tryptophan into seratonin, along with B6.
I was reading the other day that it's ill-advised for most Americans to take 5-HTP because of the high B6 content of the American diet. The 5-HTP gets turned into seratonin before getting to the brain and effectively increases the blood serum levels of seratonin without increasing the brain levels, or something to that effect. (I really need to start a notebook and/or at least bookmarking things again.)

I was thinking the same thing the other day.

And which Thesis would do us more good here: glutamate-aspartate and its role OR nutritional deficiencies (such as zinc, magnesium, dolate) OR dairy, soy, corn, gluten causing all the other intolerances? I would be taking all the mandatory courses to get the degree, but I'm sure it's mostly allopathic stuff that isn't going to do much good in the real world. The whole point would be learning more for elimination diets, reflux, and healing the gut. Jacqueline, like you, I need to start keeping track of stuff in a notebook, since my memory is so zapped.

What are you talking about? My memory is fine! My brain's just too small!

Good to know. I wonder if this can happen just from taking lots of B6? I have been feeling so down about things the past few days and just started 100mg B6. Maybe I need more BH4?

I believe this is because the SAD is full of fortified grains, no? So, if you're not getting all those extra Bs in your cereal, bread, etc etc then it's not such an issue.

Also, yes, the mouse was in our car. Dave caught one already (from before), but there's still mouse poop occasionally in the carseat covers. *gag* I've washed those things so many flippin' times now.

That's what I was thinking too, Nessa. My research has been so terribly scattered lately and I'm lacking in both the energy and time to explore even half of everything I want to with as much depth as is required. It drives me a little crazy that I only have a surface knowledge of things, iykwim.
Mice are just no fun to begin with. Mice in the car are terrible.

ETA: Despite what I just said, I actually really like mice. They're just messy. I want a pet mouse though... Did you know they're supposed to be the communicators with elves and other nature spirits?

I am hungry all the time too. I would love to figure it out.

We got this to catch our mouse:
http://www.amazon.com/Smart-Mouse-Tr...0338028&sr=8-1

It worked, and we let him go in an open field not too far away... hopefully he found a good spot there, not in another person's home. It has to be checked daily though, and for multiple mice, well... I don't know.

Now how is it allergy-related? Well, we baited the trap with stuff we can't have - peanut butter and graham crackers.

Well you mentioned you were going to start writing things down, so it was in reference to that (not your memory).

I had mice as pets as a kid. Mine always attacked and ate my brother's mice. And then we had them in Gifted class, and they ate their young. That was a gross lesson about not leaving the father in with them... So I'm not so fond of mice (we did find a mama mouse with 5 mouselets in DD1's tshirt drawer and rehomed them, so I'm not a horrible meanie). In fact we don't kill any up there.... which is why I'm always cleaning up the poop.

That's hilarious. The only gluten we have in the house is the saltine crackers that come with the chili from Wendy's and we keep them so that the kids can feed them to the ducks at the park. I feel bad for the ducks, actually, I bet lots of people feed them, and it's totally nutritionless stuff like saltine crackers. If that makes up a significant portion of their diets, well, poor little things.

And remember, the whole point of the chat thread was to talk about all sorts of stuff, some of which doesn't have to be allergy-related. Though basically everything is allergy/nutrition/gut-related, right?

I know. I was trying to make a joke but my sense of humour's just not up to par lately, I guess. My memory is terrible most of the time.
: I know you're not supposed to have more than one male in a group or they'll form 2 groups (or as many groups as there are males) or alternatively the males will fight until there's only one left and then choose whether or not they like the females and whether or not to kill them... And I knew that males will eat the young too, but that's true of most males in the animal kingdom so... We had a male cat once when I was little that ate his brothers and sisters (2 litters after him). I don't want to breed them, I just want one mouse.
My dad always killed the baby mice.

I've never seen cats eat each other. Eeewwww. Want a flying squirrel for a pet? We have plenty of those in our eaves/soffitts (they keep DD1 up at night with all their scurrying). DH uses peanut butter in those traps, but they've figured out how to lick it off without getting caught. I had three huge bowls of chicken-rice soup for lunch and all I can think of is peanut butter-coconut oil-honey balls (but then I'd have to make them).

ITA, cannibalism is completely wretch worthy, regardless of the animal species involved. (Who was complaining they were hungry all the time? ) I wonder if one can be allergic to their own species?
I like flying squirrels but not enough to keep them as pets. I want mice for their magical properties. I want to talk to the fae!
I'm trying to figure out what I have the energy to make for lunch. Tonight's sloppy joe night (which I don't really want to eat nor make ) so I want something decent for lunch. I'm thinking salad and some honeydew. Honeydew sounds good.

I hear you. Tonight is Salmon and squash night, but we're out of both and I'm trying not to grocery shop until Friday (when I'm doing a major Costco run -- but it's 45 minutes away). So I think I'm doing a turkey burger for DD2 and beef burgers for everybody else. And I have to see what vegetables I have lurking around. I love sloppy joes.... but they're just not as much fun without the squishy roll. DS is having curried chickpeas for his afternoon snack (he had them for breakfast as well... too much of a good thing?).

He said his stomach doesn't hurt at all anymore (and even with the bedwetting, leg pain, screaming at night, he never said that his stomach hurt). Though Monday morning he said his stomach hurt before school (but it got better 5 minutes later). I think that's a good thing. But it could just mean changed symptoms again.

Does anyone put cocoa in their honey-peanut butter-coconut oil balls? I could do that for DS. He's bored with all his school lunch choices and I can't think of much that is good cold for him.

My first try was a disaster (months ago) but this last batch was pretty good. HOwever, I am no able to blend with the lid off. It splatters everywhere. Any thoughts or tips?
