Nice! Thanks for sharing this article. It's a very skillful rebuttal and it was a pleasure to read.

Fantastic.

I enjoyed that too. That Hannah Rosen piece makes me get a lump in my throat because it's difficult to express the things that feel wrong about it. This article and some of the others I've been reading recently have put form to those feelings.

The last paragraph especially really made me want to sob. This topic is so emotional for me. We NEED change in this country so bad. It truly breaks my heart to hear there are women like Rosin having such a loud voice when she is standing for the wrong things.

I'm praying more of these articles in retort to her get noticed and one of them can have a voice louder than Rosin.

That's a great rebuttal article. I especially like this part:

Quote:
That's not my understanding of the evidence, so I called Miriam Labbok, MD, a professor of public health at the University of North Carolina, whom I was surprised wasn't quoted in the article. Labbok has thirty-plus years in the field of maternal and child health, was recently senior advisor to UNICEF on infant feeding, and lately she's been organizing conferences on feminism and breastfeeding. Labbok called in NPR to rebut Rosin (she's has been on quite the media tour) and cosigned a letter to the Atlantic along with two dozen other researchers and advocates: "The online review of the medical literature described in the article misrepresents the evidence . . . " it reads. The American Academy of Pediatrics also responded: "The evidence for the value of breastfeeding is scientific, it is strong, and it is continually being reaffirmed by new research work."
SO many people are reading Rosin's article as an authoritative review of the medical literature. It's NOT. It's just one medically-uneducated person's quick-read of a few medical journal articles.

Sigh. So frustrating.

I got to hear Miriam speak at a conference a few weeks ago, and she was GREAT! I was so happy to be in her session. She's an actual medical doctor who knows her stuff.

Very true; that's my main issue with it.

Here's my favorite part from the linked article:

Quote:
The problem is that it should never have come to be seen as equivalent to normal physiology, the superiority of which is really quite breathtaking when you think about it.
I was thinking about this yesterday walking to my math class. I recalled a conversation I'd had wherein a man asked me why I'd chosen to breastfeed. My answer? "I believe that all young have a right to the breastmilk of their own species." It's not rocket science. It's simple physiology--whether you want to consider it the divine grace of God's design or millions of years of evolution, the intent in our bodies is clear, and it's always somewhat of a stumper to me that we even have this ongoing argument.
