What Is The #1 Veggie Consumed By Toddlers? - Page 2

I'll confess we eat a lot of fries here. But as much as possible, they're homemade, and I think that's vastly different from McFries.

Still deep-fried? Sure. But I don't panic too much about that. A little fat is good for you.

DD loves all veggies, we did BLW and she's a great eater. But I wouldn't claim for a second that her favourite is anything but french fries. She loves all potatoes, eats tomatoes like apples, asks for carrot and corn and peas and cucumber... but she'll set them all aside if there's a plate of fries instead.

And at least in our case, it's not simply a case of "if that's what you give them then that's what they'll eat" (though I'd agree that's probably true for many kids). She's always had a healthy variety of healthy foods. She also loves potato chips and Doritos and (eek!) pop and can eat her body weight in chocolate. They just taste good!

I think ds has had two french fries in his life.
That video is a sad commentary on Americans.

In our house, it would be carrots and broccoli. Maybe squash/zucchini. Yum! I can't wait for our garden to start producing! :

We're all about peas at my house. My DH is very proud of his half-English boy!

It was somewhat reassuring that all the people who answered the question sounded horrified...

ds's fav is corn... and I have tried to give him french fries (baked w/ a tiny bit of olive oil at home) but he doesn't like them. He also eats green beans, peas, carrots, cucumber, zucchini, red pepper... the list goes on

Well in my book chips (aka fries) don't count as a vegetable - they fall into the grains & starches food category (though my DH will argue otherwise!).

DD does like chips but honestly I don't see anything wrong with them. They're potatoes with olive oil or sunflower oil. Separately I think very few people would have qualms about giving their DC those - so why are they bad together? Why are 'sweet potato fries' okay ( I see lots of recommendations to make those for your toddler on here, even in the healthy living sections) but not white potato fries?

Of course they're bad if you're eating nothing else, or if you're counting them as a serving of vegetable to the detriment of getting enough servings of actual vegetables, but eaten in moderation, like anything else there's nothing wrong with them, IMHO.

FWIW DD's favourite vegetable is peas.

I didn't watch the video but wanted to share this:

DS (age 4) had a pre-k assessment done today and when the lady asked him what his favorite food was he said, "broccoli"

She thought that was so cool, said no other kid had said that, they usually say "pizza" or "hot dogs" She wasn't even asking him about vegetables, yet it probably is his very favorite food at the moment.

he does eat french fries, though

We are struggling getting our 18 mos old to eat veggies. She has been a picky eater from the start. How in the world is everyone getting their toddlers to eat all these veggies?

I try, try, try...and all her food just ends up on the floor. And of course I end up nursing every few hours at night still...very often!

On holidays, we have given her mashed potatoes & she doesn't like them... which is unheard of in my family!! And for awhile she ate sweet potatoes, but now not at all. Tomatoes somedays. I started our veggie seeds inside last month & am hoping gardening increases her interest?

She has shocked us lately & really likes mahi mahi. (We knew she wasn't allergic to seafood because of allergy testing awhile back.) We get our fish from Whole Foods so I feel good about her eating that. But the string beans I served with it went right onto the floor...

My son eats french fries, but like many people have already said, I don't qualify them as a vegetable around here. They are a treat. And if they are served as part of a meal, they are homemade and generally there are other veggies on th plate too. I don't see them as a problem if they're a "sometimes" food.

I think DS' favourite veggie is sweet peppers (raw), followed closely by tomatoes (which I know are technically a fruit) and peas.

This video is put out by the company that makes a very Cheeto-like snack product for toddlers, right? And those grody meat sticks? I think most kids would be safer scarfing fries! LOL.

Some kids are just picky eaters. Dd (5) eats tons of veggies and always has. She asks for more veggies regularly. But, ds (2) is another story. The only veggie he'll eat is lettuce. Romaine lettuce with salad dressing. And I've tried all the "tricks" - cheese sauce, butter, etc. He just won't eat them! Every day I put a serving of the veggie du jour on his plate, and every day I eat it or throw it away! I'm hoping that one day he'll shock us and actually eat them!

Oh... I guess now I can add french fries to his veggie list! Lettuce and fries! lol

my son's prescool teacher actually conducted a "test" with a few different veggies.. Carrots won. Hands down.

That's so disgusting, and so very sad.

I make french fries sometimes (more often baked than fried), but they are the starch of the meal! Not a vegetable

Ds's favorite vegetable is okra, broiled with olive oil. French fries produce much more pleasant diapers than plates of okra, this I know to be true

Yes but what are they going to do? Put all the people who answer "French fries, duh!" onto their video advert?

true that
Plus, who thinks about french fries as a vegetable?! It's a strange association (and kind of a leap).

i really don't see anything wrong with french fries or sweet potato fries every once in a while. my daughter loooooooves them and has them when we go out to dinner as a treat and loves them baked. tasty! didn't know they were so evil and hated. sometimes she goes a couple days barely eating anything so if she wants some fries i can't reasonably object.

she eats other stuff though, like steamed broccoli. that's a real veggie.

I never considered french fries a veggie.

I sometimes make baked sweet potato fries, those are veggie-ish.

Now I want some french fries.
