Of course that oracle of medicine, Hanna Rosin, has this to say on the study:

I hesitate to write this for fear of more hate mail [:], but here goes. There's a whole new angle emerging in the breast-feeding literature, as today's New York Times brings to light: Not only is breast-feeding best for babies, but it's best for mothers as well! .....Now this would be nifty if it were true. But this study is far, far from proving it. It has all the same flaws as most breastfeeding research, as I outlined in my recent Atlantic story. The study shows an association, not a causation. ..... diabetes and heart disease are enormously complicated diseases, influenced by myriad factors. The idea that you should make a decision based on what might happen thirty years down the road seems ludicrous. Better to just stay reasonably healthy and hope for the best.

I'm *almost* feeling grateful to Hanna, in the wake of her article, there seem to be a great bunch of pro-bf articles coming out!

ITA. I'd like to invite Hanna to visit the nursing home and see my mother-in-law, who is battling all sorts of trouble that can be traced to diabetes. And no, she didn't breastfeed any of her children. Any ammunition one can use to fight against this pervasive and dreadful disease should be taken advantage of, even if it is 30 years down the road.

And for the record to Hanna, I was in my 20s when my mom was diagnosed with osteoporosis. I deliberately focused on weight-bearing exercise from then on because I read that if you did it in your 20s, it could protect your bones after menopause. Silly me for thinking about this when I should have been out closing down nightclubs or something.

Anyway, this news about breastfeeding being great for moms, too, just warms my heart.
