My Ella Grace

We have a girl!!!!

Ella Grace was born yesterday morning (Earth Day!) at 6:30 A.M. weighing 8 lbs 1 oz. She is fabulous and we are both doing well.

On Tuesday I went to bed with a headache. I woke up around 1:00 a.m. Wednesday morning with a few contractions. Decided to take a shower which brought the contractions on full force. I woke DP up and told her we had better call the midwife and start heading to the hospital. By 3:00 we left the house and reached the hospital at 4:00 - not the most pleasant car ride ever. By now the contractions were coming 3-4 minutes apart. The admitting nurse didn't take me very seriously after I told her when the contractions had started and she moved slowly. I had a feeling I had already hit transition and started throwing up as soon as they put me in the admitting evaluation room. The nurse checked me and said I was only 3 cm dilated, but I knew she was wrong. She moved even more slowly and muttered something about not tolerating pain well. Finally she admitted me. The first thing they made me do was a 20 minute strip monitoring the baby, which meant I had to lie still on my back. Bad idea! I felt like I was being torutred. When that finally ended and I could get up and move around I felt a little better. Finally my midwife showed up - the one I had been hoping would be on-call. I relaxed as soon as I saw her. She took one look at me and told the nurse she was crazy if she thought I was only 3 cm and that the baby would be here within the hour. She told the nurse to fill up the birthing tub, but the nurse was resistant because I wasn't "far enough along." The midwife filled the tub herself. As soon as I got in I felt a wave of relaxation, immediately followed by the urge to push. I pushed for 30 minutes and then had my darling girl in my arms. DP was a fabulous support and did the best she could to help me find some relief and relax a little despite the nurse. She held me from behind while I pushed and she got to announce baby's sex and cut the cord.

I love my midwife. She saved the day for us! Despite the nurse, it was a fabulous experience! And only 5 1/2 hours on my first child!! I'm still sort of in shock. In fact, my first words when the midwife put baby on my chest were, "Oh my god there's a baby on my chest!"

(and they totally did that to me at the birth center with my son- never got to use the tub b/c nobody thought anything was happening, they told my husband he could go take a nap! and then I pushed that baby out in just 20 minutes of second stage...)
