My aunt just sent me my father's baby book, and a card of feeding baby was tucked inside. The top of the card has this paragraph:
". . .Remember that almost all mothers can nurse their own babies if they try, and that mother's milk is the best food for the baby. DO not wean the baby during the first 8 months, unless advised to do so by the doctor. If the baby is cross, constipated, and not gaining well on mother's milk, he probably needs a little extra feeding of modified milk after each nursing, rather than be taken from the breast entirely."
I admit my knowledge on the history of breastfeeding is weak, but I had the impression that it was not in vogue in the 40s, 50s, 60s, OR 70s, so I was impressed and surprised to read this.
Anyway, thought it was interesting

. I guess MI was a bit more 'with it' than MO!

What a nightmare for both mother AND baby!
