*Wow* Michigan dept of Health in 1942

My aunt just sent me my father's baby book, and a card of feeding baby was tucked inside. The top of the card has this paragraph:

". . .Remember that almost all mothers can nurse their own babies if they try, and that mother's milk is the best food for the baby. DO not wean the baby during the first 8 months, unless advised to do so by the doctor. If the baby is cross, constipated, and not gaining well on mother's milk, he probably needs a little extra feeding of modified milk after each nursing, rather than be taken from the breast entirely."

I admit my knowledge on the history of breastfeeding is weak, but I had the impression that it was not in vogue in the 40s, 50s, 60s, OR 70s, so I was impressed and surprised to read this.
Anyway, thought it was interesting

Wow, I love to hear about antique guidance in favor of BF!

Wow, that is amazing!

I saw a hospital pamphlet given to my MIL's mom around the same period...and it advised starting the baby on soup at 4 weeks . I guess MI was a bit more 'with it' than MO!

1940 feeding advice

Thanks for sharing that!

It was not what I expected at all.

I just love to read about baby care advice from other periods.

I had an old pamphlet from the 70's when my first was born in 1984, from Carnation, which recommened using an evaporated milk concoction, "remember, the Dionne quintuplets were successfully raised on Carnation."

Soup at 4 weeks, now that's a new one for me!

I know~~it made my day to read this! I'd like to know what modified milk is though!
I wish my grandmother or Dad (bio Dad, my step-Dad is my REAL father )were still around so I could ask if my Dad actually was breastfed, 'cause he had terrible allergies.

My grandmother kept detailed notes of the doctor's directions for feeding my mother (1953), and included in those notes is: "Two weeks - 2 egg yolks." Raw, that is! What a nightmare for both mother AND baby!
