In light of the fact that we have many parents come here with questions about normal separation symptoms, I thought it would be a great idea to have a thread about normal separation symptoms that our sons have had.

If you are a new here please check out these two links first:

Remember separation is unique to each boy but it is a totally natural, normal developmental phase that can be accompanied with some common symptoms.

My son's experience was somewhat different because his foreskin separated all at once making the symptoms much more extreme than we typically see. Although, I have seen quite a few parents that come here with similar experiences of sudden separation. As I said before it is unique to each boy.

At 10 months of age my son's foreskin separated from the glans. He was already potty trained so I was able to see it happen as he urinated. It was EXTREMELY painful due to the fact that it happened so abruptly and the urine was passing over the freshly separated glans. This stings quite a bit!!! His foreskin ballooned up (and still balloons) as he urinated. This happens because the opening was still very narrow, as it is intended to be. If you read the thread above you know that ballooning is normal. My son also had some moderate redness and swelling and some discharge. The foreskin is very vascular so it tends to react easily to this type of trauma. Thankfully we had a wonderful foreskin-wise pediatrician that confirmed what was going on and I had the wonderful members of this forum to help me out. Keep in mind that if I had know then that it was just normal separation I would NOT have bothered to go to the doctor, as this is unnecessary and can be risky with many doctors. (Our pedi is a member of Doctor's Opposing Circumcision.) My son was in a great deal of discomfort for about 3-4 days, until the glans smoothed over and the urine no longer stung. The redness and swelling went down after day 3. I gave him some Tylenol to help out. The old "pee under water" trick didn't work for us b/c the opening was still so narrow that his urine could not mix with the water to take the sting away. Now his foreskin remains separated and he still has a nice balloon when he pees. I'm sure he will take great joy from his balloon when he is older.

Okay, everyone feel free to post the symptoms/experiences your sons have experienced from the normal separation process. I think this thread will put many parents at easy as they come to us with questions/concerns.
