Essential slings/wraps for the newborn stage

I have a new babe on the way, and I didn't really wear my ds at all. I bought a WAHM ring sling when he was 7 months old, but he was already huge by then(big baby), and I couldn't really get the hang of it. I know I want to wear the new baby a lot more, as long as she likes it. So far I have that WAHM ring sling(which I'm thinking of selling cuz I don't really like the print anymore, but I would replace it with a Maya wrap), a Lucky Baby small pouch, and I might possibly be getting a cheap Moby from a mama on another board.

Is there anything else that I'm missing?

Instead of the moby, you may want a lighter weight wrap, like the Wrapsody, since your baby is coming in Aug. Summer babies can be HOT, and you don't want anything to add to the heat. That said, I really do love a wrap for a newborn, just a lightweight, breathable one

My two essentials for newborn, must have slings from day one and on are a ring sling and a good quality wrap. I'd be happy with just those two if I couldn't have any other carrier (I have a ton though LOL).

Thanks, I didn't realize that about the Moby. I declined on it. I'll have to check out the Wrapsody.

Well...the Wrapsody is gorgeous, but a leeetle out of my price range.

After doing extensive research last night(I was obsessed with finding the perfect wrap, lol), I think I've narrowed it down to the Sleepy Wrap or maybe the MamaMade Picara wrap. Does anyone have experience with these? I'm wondering if they are at least somewhat comparable to the Wrapsody in terms of breathability. The last thing I want to do is wrap my babe in something hot in this awful GA summer heat!

What part of GA do you live in? I'm in Atlanta and my LO is 4 months old and I love my moby!!!! It does get warm but i just strip her down to a diaper and she love it plus she gets skin to skin contact which usually put her right to sleep. If you're in the Atlanta area the Koala moms group will let you try one different wraps and you can meet and talk to other baby wearing mommas.

I'm about an hour NE of ATL...I don't mind the drive but don't get out there very often.

Sleepy wrap

I have a sleepy wrap and love it with my baby. I think it would be fabulous for a newborn. However, I will comment that it is warm when it gets really hot here (California). I agree with the person who suggested a wrapsody/gypsy mama for an August baby. Perhaps you could find a used one on Craigslist or thebabywearer.com if the new ones are too expensive. If your area doesn't really get above 80 degrees or you stay inside in the air conditioning, then I highly recommend the sleepy wrap.

Haha, it definitely gets above 80 degrees here. I'm in GA, and it's 80 degrees right NOW. Ha. I can only imagine what August is going to be like.

Sigh. I guess I'll try to find a used Wrapsody. Thanks for your input, I really thought I had found my wrap, but I guess I have to keep looking or just make one for myself. I'm really not crafty like that though, but maybe I can get some help.

I have a Wrap 'n Wear that I love. It's 100% lightweight crinkle cotton and it wasn't as expensive as some of the other gauze wraps. My almost 3 week old DD absolutely loves it! We just had some 90 degree days here and we didn't have any overheating or sweating issues

I was ok with my Moby in hot weather if we stayed indoors... depends on what you think your days will be like. If you are going to be outside tons with older LO, a Wrapsody might be woth the investment.

Alternatively... you can make a cool summer wrap with a 5 yards of cotton gauze fabric from the store. It won't be stretchy like the Wrapsody Stretch, so IME there's a little more of a learning curve... but it would be a whole lot cheaper, and nice and cool.

As for the "ring sling"... Not a hippie brand, but infantino does a sling (it has an adjustable buckle, not a ring) and I liked it much better than just fabric and ring. It has a little more structure to it (nothing hard, of course). It has kind of a light foam for back/head support, the "sides" are mesh for breathability, and there is a little baby velcro thingy to prevent them from sliding into a funky position. It also had some padding on the shoulder.

Slings are SO personal. Some people HATE all the little "extras", but to me, the ones on this infantino were really helpful. I got it 2nd hand, so the financial investment was not big. Here it is: http://www.amazon.com/Infantino-Slin.../dp/B00013278O

It worked great until a few months. Then for a while I used a New Native.

My husband LOVES the Ultimate Baby Wrap (I find that because I am so short, DS2's legs dangle way far down, which is uncomfortable for me. Works fine on a back carry, but you need help to get them in there...

Looks like you've narrowed down your options, but I wanted to throw in my 2 cents, since I've been wearing my new ds so much more than I did ds1. Moby Wrap and Maya Wrap have both been GREAT! I probably prefer the Moby for comfort (as he's getting bigger the Maya starting to bother my shoulder), but for ease of use I'm liking the Maya better (easy-on, easy-off). I've also started using the Ergo the past couple days and have been really enjoying that....but you were asking about slings wraps.

I know, don't even talk to me about Ergos yet! I think that'll be a great investment for the older baby/toddler stage though. Baby steps, baby steps.

I lucked out and actually found a gently used Gypsymama wrap on diaperswappers. : AND I'm being given a Moby by a very gracious mama, which I figure I can use when it starts getting a little colder this coming fall/winter. So, I'll be starting out wiht a Gypsymama, a Moby, and a Ringsling. I think that's pretty good....

Thanks for all the input mamas.
