Swine Flu

Ok is this a real concern?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090424/ts_nm/us_flu

I am quite scared after reading this...........Or is this some kind of scare to get a flu shot this year? I am guessing flu shots were really not getting to many sales for 08?
No- this isn't a scare to get a flu shot.
They've already said the current flu shot will do nothing for this new strain. They may try to produce one if this becomes a larger issue.
I honestly have zero problem w/ trying to make a vax for this if it b/c a serious concern-
We don't vax and I don't think we'd get it if it were offered-
But I'm also not too worried about this either.
It sounds scary- but try not to worry.

But my mom did go to costco and buy out the place w/ supplies just in case :-)

Honestly the ONLY thing that worries me at all w/ this- is IF it gets to be pandemic in the U.S.- I'm in my 3rd trimester and am planning a hospital birth and would REALLY not want to step food in a hospital! I seriously think i might be a UCer!!!!

I don't think it has anything to do with using up extra flu shots, either. Sounds like quite a few have died in Mexico, according to the article. I would think the most helpful thing would be quarantine (and supplements to support the immune system...). Or maybe they don't know yet if it's human-human transmittable?
It is almost certainly human to human- at least one of the U.S. cases had a patient who had had no contact with pigs. The big concern here that points to possible pandemic is that healthy adults are dying from it. Like in 1918, the healthy body's immune response was actually an over-response with regard to survival. The elderly and the very young faired better with that strain, and signs are pointing to similar conditions here. I wonder if information technology and just better understanding of pandemic flu will help us deal better if this is the real deal.
This one does concern me, particularly because the ones infected did not have pig interaction. Also, as someone already mentioned, healthy people are dying and the death toll is up to almost 70 in Mexico and I think I just heard CNN reporting that there are a # in NY testing positive. The CDC is working on a vax for this, should it be necessary. I will be watching this one.

I have an idea! don't eat veges from Mexico!!!
Eat local!
They mention in the article that very few of the people even had conact with another person that had the flu.
So......

The official flu season is over in a week.

it's a scary prospect (swine flu) but i wonder how true it is, or where the line between fact and fiction is drawn.

DH's grandmother received the vax they administered during the "outbreak" in '76. she died from guillane barre syndrome a few weeks later.

what bothers me about this is that they have been advertising the long awaited outbreak of avian/swine flu.... and not too long ago a contaminated batch of avian flu vaccines out of australia was supposedly recalled...

i don't find it hard to believe that a pharmecutical company would deliberately do it... maybe that's a bit crazy but i've been hearing about this long awaited outbreak... and here it is... just like the economic collapse we heard we were going to have last year...

i don't know how to feel about it... i wouldn't be traveling to mexico though..

it just sounds all too creepy

I've read the swine flu vaccine in the 70's was nasty. My other concern about this is that they will be quick to make a vaccine for it, w/o proper testing (well, when ARE they properly tested?!?) and all that.

Interesting theory, I'm not all that sure that someone(s) would unleash it on purpose but I totally see it happening by accident, like you said with the avian flu thing recently. Heck maybe that even has something to do with this, as they did say it was a combo with an avian virus.

i believe it is a calculated effort. it is a mix of swine/avian/human virus. it is 100% engineered in a lab imo. the reason it is killing them in mexico is because that is where they shipped the contaminated vaccines that they used to distribute it. i just read of this today in an email from the natural solutions foundation. here is a link.

check this out too, on the food bills...

the secret (not so much anymore tho) society that has been in control of virtually everything is now in its death throes. everything is coming to light. but someone still keeps handing out money. soon money will also collapse and mean nothing perhaps. we will survive all this, or our physical bodies will die. in the grand scale of things, it doesnt matter either way. i believe that the ones that have been avoiding the vaccines for more than one generation will fare the best with the new mix they are attacking with now. and it could be that the powers that be will understand everything in time to prevent the course from flowing to far in that destructive direction. if enough of us know and believe and formulate a different future... so it shall be.

I don't think there's any evidence that Mexican vegetables are causing the swine flu?

I'm keeping an eye on this, since I live in Mexico.
a lot of veggies come from mexico, because of my location, it's more local than stuff from the mid-west... but i try to buy as local as possible...but no, mexican veggies are not causing the swine flu.
i heard on the news they were giving people vax for this in mexico city...? don't know how true this is.

These types of things terrify me

Diseases don't always watch the calendar (i.e. a pandemic could still spread at this point in time.)

And for those of you who are conspiracy theorists: Sometimes diseases just happen. Independent of anyone's "engineering."

(But the factory-farming of chickens and pigs, where they are raised in very crowded conditions, does make a perfect environment for a new strain of disease.)

A "seed stock" genetically matched to the new swine flu virus has been created by the CDC, said Dr. Richard Besser, the agency's acting director. If the government decides vaccine production is necessary, manufacturers would need that stock to get started.

That was quick.

I haven't heard of any vaxes being given out yet, but my spanish is limited (trying to watch Mexican news here!). I'm going to check out the newspapers - i read better than I hear!

Just about a month ago they mixed the flu shot with a bird flu virus and sold it to some European country. It was an American company in Europe.

That would could have caused a lot of deaths if it were not for one astute chemist who checked out the vaccine and made the discovery.

Wonder what went on in Mexico?

Was this mostly in people who had received the flu shot?
Yes, Gitti. Very interesting indeed.

Also, it is interesting (at least to me) that CDC already has a "stock" ready to be made into vaxes.
