Swine Flu - Page 2

kiara7- I'm not sure how accurate that is. In the CDC Press Briefing transcript Richard Besser mentions a 'feed stock' not a 'seed stock'. I'll have to look more into this to know for sure what was meant, as I'm reading conflicting info. Do you have a reliable source?

Sooo, I don't believe any conspiracy theories whatsoever...

That aside, I do work in health care (ICU nurse) and am a selective/delayed vaccinating parents and this is making me apprehensive.

Not even nervous or scared yet, but I'm definitely watching it.

Just a quote from yahoo news. Let us know if you find anything definitive.

Looks like there are now cases in Kansas! I normally don't get worried about this stuff, but this has me concerned. I already told my husband that I won't think twice about pulling the kids from school and having him work from home.

The 1918 swine flu started at a base/camp where there were no swine. However, the soldiers had been vaccinated immediately prior to that (after WWI.)

I bet "new swine flu vaccine campaign" comes out shortly.

we are about a half hour from mexico but i really don't even feel worried. mexico city is practically wartorn and not that affluent to begin w/ right? 1300 reported possible cases probably isn't the tip of the iceberg. i thought i read "mild flu like symptoms" for the u.s. cases. we had a couple of bad respiratory viruses here this past month that i assumed was some flu or another. i guess i am missing something - we even live w/ swines and avians and humans too of course.
I also heard on CNN that all the U.S. cases have been only mild flu symptoms and all are recovering fine with no treatment (no antivirals or anything). Only one U.S. case was hospitalized. They didn't seem all that concerned about the U.S. cases on the news. They just said to make sure you wash your hands well since that is the best way to prevent the flu. I'm not worried at all.

At least one of the previous swine flu episodes was man made. I don't have my book with me right now to give all the specifics.

Also the yahoo article says only 20 confirmed deaths.

And how about this?

Quote:
Now, even detaining the ill may not keep the strain — a combination of swine, bird and human influenza that people may have no natural immunity to — from spreading, epidemiologists say.
This is highly unlikely to occur naturally in the wild.

People don't have natural immunity to a virus. Why else would people get the regular flu more than once? why would we get a cold over and over every year?

And how about this?

Quote:
Early detection and treatment are key to stopping any outbreak. WHO guidance calls for isolating the sick and blanketing everyone around them with anti-viral drugs such as Tamiflu.
That is going to line some peoples pockets.

I don't think we should ignore new diseases or try to use preventative measures for it spreading. But the thought of them having "stock" ready to make the vaccines. Then they go on to say that it would take "months" to have one ready. MONTHS? Thats it??!! And you want to inject that crap into everyone? After a few months? Sorry but I seriously feel sick to my stomach.

People do have immunity to any virus they have had. When you get the flu again it is either a new strain or immunity has diminished. Same for colds which are caused by corona viruses. There are hundreds of them. You are not getting the same virus over and over. You may be confusing viruses with bacteria which you can get repeatedly.

This whole thing scares me I seriously hope this wont turn into a panidemic

Apparently pres Obama met with a person in Mexico who just died of flu-like/related symptoms. Kinda scary, but probably coincidental

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/wa...rip_to_mexico/
The outbreak coincided with President Barack Obama's trip to Mexico City on April 16. Obama was received at the anthropology museum in Mexico City by Felipe Solis, a distinguished archaeologist who died a week later from symptoms similar to flu, Reforma newspaper reported. The newspaper didn't say if Solis had swine flu or not

Me too. I've been hearing ads for this looming "pandemic flu" for months now.

It looks like some schools in Texas are going to be closed. We live in Texas. I think we will lay low this week and skip most of our homeschool activiites, maybe one birthday party but not every activity, until I know more.

Of course there will be someone to profit from this:

Quote:
The swine flu outbreak is likely to benefit one of the most prolific and successful venture capital firms in the United States: Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Thomson Reuters Private Equity Week reported on Friday.

Shares of the two public companies in the firm's portfolio of eight Pandemic and Bio Defense companies -- BioCryst Pharmaceuticals (BCRX.O) and Novavax (NVAX.O) -- jumped Friday on news that the swine flu killed a reported 60 people in Mexico and has infected people in the United States.

I am confused. A report on CNN just said that the people in Mexico who died from the Swine Flu did not seek medical treatment quickly enough and that there is a specific *antibiotic* that people need to get if they get swine flu. The reporter said "this antibiotic has been shown to be effective against the Swine Flu". I am sure I did not hear them wrong (my captioning said the same thing as what I heard), and I'm not even going to start with how ridiculous that sounds. Did anyone else hear this? Was it just really bad reporting? How in the world would an antibiotic help with a virus? Unless they're talking about treating a secondary bacterial infection I just don't understand...
i read that it responds readily to antivirals and even steroids. i think it was a good excuse for martial law in mexico.
I'm pretty sure it's just bad reporting. I've seen "anti-biotics" referenced several times, but then they are talking abotu treating with Tamiflu, which is an anti-viral, which I think they are confusing with antibiotic.

Does anyone else immediately think terrible things like someone will assassinate Obama and the swine flu will be blamed, and Bush cronies will use this "crisis" to re-grab power?

Yeah, I'm paranoid like that.

Yikes! That a theory I wouldn't have ever thought of. You're freaking me out!

I heard on NPR yesterday that there is already a massive flu vax campaign going on in Mexico City. Um, excuse me? I thought there wasn't yet any vax for swine flu.
