My son is 10 and can ride his bike around the neighborhood or play outside. My 6 year old can only play in the yard if her big brother or sister are with her.

I do let her play on our porch by herself, but I have the front door open and can call to her or check on her often.

It really depends on the neighborhood and the maturity of the child.

It totally depends on whether your front yard is fenced or not, what kind of traffic is on the street, and how reliable your child is individually.

I can't remember when we started but my 7.5yo has been playing outside without me for awhile. She plays with kids from two other families; our houses are all in a row with one 'grownup friend' in between who gives them permission to play in her yard. They are allowed to play in all of our yards plus one vacant lot next door. I can open my door and hear them or whistle to them. We do allow 2 or more of them to take walks around our circle as long as they tell us and check back in each time around.

I would absolutely want to know if my child was going onto someone else's property, much less taking things from the porch: so I/my child could make amends and put a stop to it!

We don't really have a yard, just a bit of grass in front of our apartment. I let ds1 play out there wth the patio door open & him staying right here around 3. I don't remember how old ds2 was when he joined ds1 without a parent outside. We still leave the door open at least a little bit & tell them to stay where we can hear them.

I voted 7-8, but dd is still 6 for 2 more weeks. I just started letting her play outside this spring. It's usually with the girl across the street (same age) & if she goes into her house or backyard, she has to come back & tell me.

I still do things so I'm close by (like I don't go take a shower or anything).

My DS' 2 and I let him go outside and play where I can't see him for short periods. I was out hiking and gone for hours by myself by 6-8 yrs old, out riding my pony around by myself at 9 when I got him... But, we live way out in the middle of nowhere, so it probably doesn't really apply to city life. :Shrug
