What do you put down under the crate?

We're about to get a new puppy.:

In this house, the crate will be on carpet. I've never had to put a crate on carpet before and want something under it so that spills and such can go on that, which can be thrown in the washer instead of ruining wall to wall carpet.

But I also want it to look nice as it is in a very visible part of the house.

I think most area rugs won't go through the wash ok - or will they? We're getting a lab so the crate is too large for a small throw rug.

Any ideas?

You can use towels. Or yes, there are throw rugs (bathroom kinds work really well) that will fit under that crate. You should only need a 400 or so size crate for a Lab. DON'T get a giant crate that will be way too big and allow the dog to go in one end and sleep in another. You should feed the dog in the crate, too, but I am sure you know that... I get going on this stuff, it's my standard crate talk for new puppy buyers.

Target has good rugs for this kind of thing.

I have this giant towel, they call it a "beach blanket" that I got from Lands End. It's huge. I wonder if you could get that and put some Chux or something under it in case there's a major spill?

New puppy but not new doggy parents.

I don't want to do towels because of the leak issue - I really want something with a rubber back to absorb puppy leakage of all sorts - cause we all know some fluid will be leaking at some point.

I will check out Target. I checked out Walmart online this morning but everything was too big. Maybe there will be something smaller in the store.

I was thinking in terms of using the towel as something to cover the Chux -- just to make your living room look a little nicer.

Or maybe towels on top of an old shower curtain if you want to be more environmentally friendly?
