yikes - put 3 yo in cloth dipes for the 1st time

After liking CD with my 3 month old, I've been wanting to start using CD for my 3 year old, who still is in disposables at night and to poop (since he refuses to poop on the potty).

OK, so I just put my 3 yo in a Happy Heiny trainer for the first time tonight. The trainer fit great, until I stuffed it (based on the rec from the place that sold me that HHs).

It's a good thing my DH isn't around, b/c he would be sending me away to the loony bin right now.

The diaper between my son's legs is so thick that even I had to turn away before he could see me chuckling. My poor DS keeps pushing it down... it looks like the biggest maxi pad you could ever imagine.

There's a toddler prefold and a super-do in there... do I REALLY need all that? I guess I'll find out in the morning. Those of you who are CDing older kids at night... what do I really need? In my big boy stash, I have a few toddler prefolds, 2 hemp inserts, and the medium super-do. Oh, and I guess I could use some BG inserts from my little babe's stash.

Also,I put a prefold on him to poop into this afternoon (since he refuses to go poop on the potty) and that gave me insight into what it will be like when my 3 month old starts eating solids. OH MY GOD... 3 1/2 yo poop is totally disgusting. I am debating just throwing the prefold out, rather than putting it into my washing machine. He pooped as much as I do, and he's only 3! And the whole "swish" thing into the toilet simply didn't work. It's still caked on the diaper. Anyone figure out how to get a stubborn 3 yo to poop in the potty (he says he's "scared" even though he's done it before).

I love CDing my 3 month old, but I'm not sure I can do this with my 3 year old. I'm all for saving money and not putting disposables on him... but c'mon, this is pretty ridiculous.

Just had to vent.

I have a couple suggestions for you before you give up! For poops, we like to put fleece liners inside the prefold. The poop comes off the fleece waaaaaaay easier than the prefold. Seriously. Just go to Joann's or Walmart and cut some pieces of the fleece that you can lay inside the diaper. Maybe like 5x12 or so? That makes the poop situation much easier. I also despise cleaning big boy poop off a prefold.

At night I bet you might be ok with just the super-do and one hemp insert. my ds is 26 mo. and we are ok with one hemp and 2 microfiber or visa versa. You won't know until you try it.

Yes - we all laughed our butts off when we saw DS in a 2 prefold stuffed HH - but it WORKED! We graduated to a swaddlebees insert (hemp) and a Nickis fleece insert and that worked great and was WAY less bulky! Not sure if it was absorbent- it's been awhile. You'll see what you can get away with

For a child that is just pooping in a diaper I'd use disposable liners.

Do you have a diaper sprayer that can be hooked up to the water lines on the toilet? Ours is a true lifesaver!

I totally agree with you about toddler, poo. It is so nasty.

I am not usually a fan of disposable liners but in this late in the game case I think it would be a fitting suggestion.

The poop will harden and you can pop it off - I used to just let it sit in the toilet until it loosened up with the corner sticking up and then flush it while holding the diaper in the water....gross I know - then I bought a diaper sprayer.........never had it installed though since DH says we need to redo the fittings on our toilet first....I started until rice paper liners......what a life saver!!!!! Those things really helped!!!!!!!!! Can't wait to use the diaper sprayer w/ my new one!

The ironic part? After all that, my DS didn't pee last night, for the first time ever!

Maybe he was traumatized by his big butt???

Good thing, too because he'd pushed the dipe so far down by the end of the night that there were huge holes around his legs.

Luckily, I saw your posts before he told me he had to poop today, so I put a fleece liner in there, and that was great... it basically contained the poo, and I could wrap it up and take it to the bathroom to flush. Much better.

Thank you!

Now, if anyone has any suggestions of how to get my DS to poop in the toilet, that would be much appreciated.

We're on a septic tank and we showed DS where the poop monster (sesame street friendly one!) lives and he has to feed him to keep him happy and from getting hungry.........my DS made that one up He still "feeds the poop monster"!

My son was afraid to do it too... in part, I think, because he didn't go regularly so it was hard work and sometimes painful. He wore undies and peed in the potty, dipes at night, and then when he had to poop he'd ask for a fuzzi bunz. I would try to hug him while he was on the potty, etc. and he'd just freak out. Then one day when my sister was watching him, she got him to go on her toilet (maybe she bribed him, but I think she just cajoled him). After that I just kept rationalizing with him ("you did it once, let's try again") until he was willing to try on our toilet (not the potty chair). Once he finally did it he actually started going everyday! It changed overnight. So I guess what I am trying to describe is a lot of patience and talk about it, and just trust that your three year old will get there!

As for the poop-I recommend flushable liners if you are totally grossed out!

This is really weird, but DS had a similar problem. He would ask for a diaper and crawl onto his bed to poop.

Turns out felt really safe there and could squat, which made it more comfortable. So, we let him poop in the yard in his favorite spot to "water the flowers." Then I got a little potty he could squat on with his legs apart and put it in the spot. Over a week, I moved it across the yard, inside and into the bathroom. He now squats on the big potty.
