Rotary Club and Polio Vaccine

My husband just recently got involved in the Rotary Club. He is concerned because he learned about how it is involved in getting polio vaccines to under-developed countries.

What do you guys think about this program? How safe and effective is the oral polio vaccine and is it really a vaccine which will help to erradicate polio in these countries?

Thanks for any insight.

While I probably would never vaccinate my children against polio, i very much support programs that bring vaccines to places where polio is still active, but then again I do believe that the opv was responsible for the erradication of polio where it has been erradicated. So I would be totally OK supporting that program.

warning: totally heartbreaking

The OPV/Sabin is associated with causing polio here in the United States.

The last few cases of polio in the US were caused by the OPV.

So Miriam and Kiera,

Are you saying that the OPV campaigns are making the situations worse in those countries that the vaccine is sent to?

and OPV is also known for spreading Polio through INDIA alsohttp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18378367

i've had many links on that but i lost my other hard drive....there is much speculation that the live vax caused contamination in the enviorment.... I totally agree w/that. The other thing in this article, and this is something i'd like to point out, is that after repeated doses it has become less effective in certain areas...they like to say it's because of thier genetics (as if it's the people that are faulty and not the vaccine), but this is a common trend as seen with all our add-on boosters. Vaccines have a peak effectiveness(if that is what you want to call it...noone gets 100% immunity the only thing you may get is a show of antibody production and that varies from individual to individual, sometimes not at all) and that differs from person to person...and it's not people who are faulty... it's the idea of chemically manipulating the immune system that is faulty...but after all these vaccines we have even more virulent strains that evolve and the immune and neurological systems of people breakdown... vaccination is an experiment gone bad

There is a really enlightening section on this in "Just a Little Prick."

The thing with the OPV is apparently that it is contraindicated (is that the right word?) for people in close contact with HIV + individuals. Many of the African communities where these polio vaccines are being distributed also have high rates of HIV/AIDS and the result, apparently, is that many people are dying as a result. In fact, according to Hillary (and she has citations for this information), there are villages in Africa which actually hide their children when the vaccinators come because they are so afraid of the aftermath.

I don't recall all of the details offhand and don't have links to support these claims, but I believe they are all there in JALP.

I believe the Rotary Club has no clue what they are doing with its involvement with the OPV.

I think you should ask yourself this question if you lived in a place where paralitic polio was a very real threat would you vaccinate your kid for polio? If your answer is No then you should not support this orgaization if you answer is yes then keep suporting them.

I agree with this. However, I would rephrase slightly...

If you lived in a place where paralitic polio was a very real threat, and you were fully informed about the efficacy rates and risks of vaccination, would you vaccinate your kid for polio?

NO NO NO NO NO

Polio is spread through fecal waste, you cannot catch it by breathing on someone .... you cannot catch it by touching someone... you can catch it by wiping your dirty hands across your tongue... but i would not do that... i realise that you can't always keep your childs hands clean, but polio, before the propaganda parade, was a mild virus with an extremely small percentage of people suffering from any paralytic effects. I would not be afraid of it... most people who had it never even realised they had polio, it most often passed as an everyday cold/flu

Polio can be spread from saliva/oral-oral route. Much rarer but definitely an issue. Also, it can be a lot like rotavirus-- in endemic areas, even trying your best to be sanitary may not work.

This, I mean how do you keep a toddler to not put things on their mouths even I sometimes eat stuff that has fallen on the floor for just a few seconds on the floor where people walk with shoes that could carry fecal matter.
I know i would totally vaccinate if polio existed where I live, I have read here about the extremely low percentage of paralytic cases, while it may be a low percentage compared to the whole population, I don't think it is a small number, when I was in High school I worked at this hospital that when it was created it was the hospital for poliomelitis a HUGE hospital, now that polio has been eradicated here it has been renamed to orthopedic hospital for children and they do a lot of other stuff, I just don't think they would build an entire hospital just to treat a couple of cases you know. At the beginning we did see a video from when the hospital was opened, and there were hundreds of children there treated for polio, so I really don't know what to think about the low risk of paralytic polio.
