HELP-- toilet running!

Fix-it mamas, please help! My toilet won't stop running! It just started doing this yesterday. Everything *looks* normal inside the tank, to my inexperienced eyes. It sounds like a faucet left on, seriously-- this is no tiny trickle. My DH (who does all the handy stuff normally) is out of town until Wednesday. Is there anything I can do? BTW it's my ONLY toilet, but if I have to, is there a way to just shut the water off just for the toilet, then turn it back on when I need to flush?

You can turn it off and pour a bucket of water in the toilet to flush. Is the suction thingy firmly sitting on the hole in the bottom? How full is the tank? Seemingly full? half full? nearly empty?

it sounds like you need a new flapper. You can shut it off behind the toilet, there should be a valve on the wall under the tank that you can turn. Take the top off the tank and check that the chain isn't caught on anything first, then check if the flap (you'll see it covering a hole in the bottom of the tank) is sitting flat and sealing the hole! After that I don't know what to tell you! Good luck!

OK, I shut the water off from the valve. Now, at least, it isn't pouring gallons of water down the drain.

Every time I look in the tank, it seems to be about 2/3-3/4 full. The suction thingie seems firmly attached.

Thanks mamas!

is the water level up to the "tube"

I just had an issue with a toilet that would fill the tank, but just keep going.
fixed it by adjusting the arm. I started twisting a screw on the arm part and it worked!

google for some pictures.
