And re: swine flu - here in the U.S. the pig industry got its panties in a bunch over the name (as reported by the Secretary of Agriculture). Thus the reason President Obama is now referring to it as "H1N1 virus"

Just as an FYI - http://www.mothering.com/discussions....php?t=1077752

This whole mass hysteria is giving me a headache. I had a mother call the synagogue to see if Hebrew school was going to be cancelled tonight due to the pandemic. Um, helloo......... we're in Lancaster. The closest case is in Jersey. The things people do to try to get out of Hebrew school.

When I was little I think I would have done most anything to get out of Hebrew school. Just thinking of it gives me shudders of a certain teacher who literally bored us to tears...ugh.

We're going to be moving. Where, we don't yet know. Maybe aliyah. Maybe not. Depends on job situation. But we will definitely be leaving our current location; the house went up on the market today.

Nic - hope the house sells easily and for a good price, this time around!
And things have changed with Hebrew School - I was told quite specifically to make it fun and entertaining for the students, so that they would be motivated to keep coming. We did play a lot, and did lots of hands-on activities like arts and crafts, though I did try to keep a conversation going throughout, to make sure they were learning while they played.

Aww, I was hoping we'd find time to get together IRL again at some point in the future- but I can understand how it's too expensive to stay here (and I think your area is even more expensive than mine.)

Well. Back from the allergist visit for Rashi. Yup. Boy, do I feel better now. Yessirree.

Rashi broke out in severe hives last Thursday. They covered his entire body including his mouth. Took him to the ped who issued an epipen and told me to take him to a regular allergist. I was willing to humor her - so made an appt with the dr. she recommended. We saw this dr. yesterday and today.

We walked in yesterday and she looked at Rashi and said that he's obviously very allergic. He has dark circles under his eyes (I was surprised she commented on that one), stuffy nose, post nasal drip, etc. I told her I was pretty certain that the reaction was from a food - as he was served a food at school that I didn't approve of. She told me based on the length of time that he'd had the hives that they were definitely NOT food related - and clearly he has severe environmental allergies. Okay. I told her he didn't, but she insisted he did. Fine. She told me that she didn't want to overpower his body iwth alll of the testing in one day - so she'd break it into two days (first day environmental because he obviously is allergic and second day to foods - where she's certain he isn't).

I asked about the testing and she told me that she would be doing skin testing because it's most accurate. I told her that the allergist that we formerly saw told me that it isn't accurate on eczema patients (Rashi has eczema). She told me that as long as she can find a bare patch of skin, that it would be fine... So. She tested him. Everything came back NEGATIVE. Well. Duh. The testing a) hasn't worked on him in the past, and b) he doesn't have environmental allergies as far as I know.

Today she did foods. They all came back negative. She told me that he obviously is NOT an allergic child and has NO allergies whatsoever. The hives are caused by possibly a virus or he has an autoimmune disorder. Nice - thanks for being scary. She told me I could go ahead and feed him any and all dairy because it won't affect him anymore (I'm pretty sure that's what's causing the hives), but I had her PERMISSION to keep him on the diet he's presently on (no dairy, peanuts, etc).

What a complete and total waste of time. At least I have her permission to feed him what I want. Ooookaay then.

And she was really nice; I liked her - but so disappointed. I think I'll stick iwth the non-mainstream testing.

Nah, nothing to do with how expensive it is here. Rather, everything to do with skyrocketing malpractice rates (rise of over 200% in 18 months) and insurance companies that don't pay physicians on time...if ever. People wonder why doctors are leaving this area in droves and they can't get the care they want....

subbing.....

I don't contribute here, because I'm learning.

You all are a great bunch of mama's.

I subbed today, because I had to look for you.

well, I finally found you
hi mams!!!

we had a rough week, baby had bronchiolitis and spent 3 nights in the hospital, B"H he is doing good now but he just needed that little bit of oxygen to get him through the worst of it. Actually, it wasn't such a bad experience, since the dr. was pretty good, ordered blood work right away, got it back, saw it was viral , cbc was fine and said no abx, just support with oxygen till he was good on his own. oh, and they only did 2 treatments with nebulizer, dr. said he didn't think it would be nescessary
I am really tired though,.....and now I have to make shabbos....
just happy to be home
and.....when asked if he was up to date with his immunisations, I said matter of factly that I do not vaccinate and I have the state exemption for all my kids dr. said they would have to test for pertussis too then, which was fine with me since I would like to know if he actually has pertussis. that was it, no-one said or asked me anything else about vaccinations

Rivka. I hate doctors like that.

I'm pretty exhausted today too. I'm still fighting off some kind of virus, and have been all week. Plus, DS is just sick enough to drive me crazy, but not sick enough to snuggle or sleep more than usual. I had to pick him up early from school yesterday and I didn't send him today. Then I had to talk to the school nurse on the phone today to let her know that he doesn't have any swine flu symptoms. :

Iam just starting to back read the thread.......(I really should be making cholent.....)
welcome Anna

tivka, we had a similar experience years ago with one of my ds.......:
At least you know better than to listen to her, but it is so that people are being told this when they really are allergic and when the dx is not black and white according to what the dr. knows they will not venture out of their box and actually do something like - think- research - question things etc;
very frustrating, continue along your natural path and hoping you will have better success.

good Shabbos.....back to the cholent

thanks. Waiting to hear back from Akiva's dr. That's where we're headed next.
Off in a feeble attempt to pull my house together.

Hey all. Just a quick

Things moving along at snail's pace. DH's job is over in another week and a half, then who knows. We're once again thinking of moving south ... going for the low rent.

For all the phone calls I haven't returned/made, my apologies.
For all the emails/SMSs I haven't responded to, my apologies.

Have been doing the self-absorption/navel-gazing thing. It's been ... illuminating. And no, I don't have a flashlight in my belly button.

Kids are out collecting wood for Lag b'Omer. I'm avoiding doing dishes.

In other words, not nearly enough is new. Which is okay for the moment.

Love you all ...

(editing to note I probably should delete the sig, but that'll mean being on this site for longer than I intended to. So ... )

Hey, merpk. I channelled you today in a Spirituality thread. We miss you.
Might I venture to say that plenty of us mamas here (and I'm not here too often these days) are happy to read any words that Merpk has to share! Good to hear ya!

Mombh: what a m'chaya. May your son continue in his mentschluch ways.

I'm so pleased to announce that DS #3 (22 mo) is now nursing only at morning and laila tov time . I was getting too annoyed at the toddler nursing of nibble nibble, run away, nibble, turn the head, suck suck, play, pull on the shirt, etc. So I easily was able to tell him we were now going to wait till laila tov time for "bobos".
