Stopped for a visit at my mom's yesterday and realized just how bad her mare has gotten in the last year. She turned 25 this month and just isn't doing well at all. Shes eating but, she VERY lame at this point. My mom said her good days are outnumbered by the bad for the last 3 months. She foundered this past winter (we had the largest snowfall since 1930something and they don't have a barn to get out of the weather, only trees) and hasn't recovered. She's been a tough horse medically. Lots of colic over the years. My mom loves both of her horses dearly and has missed many hours of work to stay home and walk a colicy horse, spent lots buying the best possible food, sups, and meds for them, and handed over many pretty pennies for vetting.
She called me today to ask if I'd look up some medications and their effects. I didn't know what they were for at first but, I just learned that they are seditives to give the other horse for when she has her mare put down.
I knew it was coming but, I didn't realize how soon. She said she just doesn't feel she is doing best by Mare keeping her around. She's been having to physically go out and help her up to a stand the last several days. She said she is probably going to take the morning off work tomorrow and have the vet out to put Mare down.
So I was hoping I could gather some good thoughts for either a quick healing or quick passing and some thoughts as well for my mom and her other horsey. My mom couldn't even talk about the whole situation on the phone earlier today. The other horse, Daryl, a 15 year old arab gelding is not going to deal with his best friend's passing well AT ALL either. He could barely handle her going out for a ride without him (he once frantically ran through a fence to go find her when she was out on a trail ride) so I have no idea what he's going to do when he sees her hoisted up into the vets trailer. They have been companions for 13+ years now.
thanks in advance for any prayers or good vibes on the matter.
