I have been reading some good things about taking mag. I need something that is for sure. I bought a liquid cal mag combo. 300 mg of mag. it says to take a tablespoon a day. Is it good to take it as a combo for depression? when do you take it morning or evening. should I take more? is there a better way to take it?

i have found magnesium to be really helpful for regulating my sleep. i think its pretty standard to take it about a half hour before bed. i was using the liquid cal/mag supplement as well, but my naturopath has put me on this instead:

that link looks a little long, hopefully it works. basically it is a powder you dissolve in water.

Magnesium is great! I have been taking a whole list of supplements and since then lots of things have changed for me. I lost 60 pounds that I've struggled with since I was a teen, I slept through the night, my cravings for sweets and junkfood are completely gone (though I still enjoy a snack here and there, I just dont feel like I HAVE to have it) my anxiety attacks are gone, my depression is gone, I don't get sick anymore, my fertility seems to have increased since I just got pregnant again, my anemia is gone... hmmm too many to list but thats just an idea. PM me if you wanna know what I'm taking, btw it comes to about $24 a month for what I'm taking and let me tell you it is SOOOO worth it!

I'd be wary of having a cal/mag combo as your ONLY magnesium source, especially if you've been deficient in magnesium for a while. Magnesium and calcium (and vitamin D and a few other minerals) all work together in your body. When you take more calcium, you need more magnesium to go with it. Taking more cal/mag won't help if you have enough calcium but just need more magnesium.

Generally, the cal/mag supplements contain twice as much calcium as magnesium. Many people need cal and mag in equal proportions, and some even need more mag than cal, at least for a while. What I do personally is take a cal/mag supplement containing 1000 mg of cal and 500mg of mag, and take it with another 500mg of mag in a separate pill.
