Ok...how do WE make $$ with our Blogs? MDC momma blogs rock! - Page 2

Also- under that Mr Linky thing, you can click on "get the code' and then paste it into a blogpost on your page. Whenever a new MDC mom signs up, she'll be updated into EVERY one.

Instead of Blogspot's "following" you can subscribe to wordpress blogs using email if they have a widget for it, or you can usually drag and drop the RSS icon into your toolbar if you're using firefox-

My advice: Content is king. Write content that people want to tell their friends about. Be informative, provocative, knowledgeable, authoritative, go deep not shallow, talk about things no one else is willing to talk about.

You don't have to blog daily. It's better if every one of your entries is top notch and you only post twice a week then to throw something up there just to get something up there. If people think your entries are hit or miss they may not come back, but if every entry is a hit for them, they'll be back.

There is some definite food for thought here. I blog mostly as a journal for myself, and apologize if I'm butting in here (you all seem to know each other ). I lurk a lot, and am trying to get better about posting. I have always loved to write, and would love to get better at this blogging thing, but I have a hard time finding time to blog. I end up posting 5 things at once every few days when I can find the time. Then I forget what I wanted to write half the time, lol. Anyway, I am in the "build up readership before advertising" camp, and also the "AdSense is ugly" one. I will keep an eye on this thread, hopefully it will give me the kick in the pants I need!

I think adsense ads are so ugly too.

I was really sad when MDC added them.

I like how dharma mama set up her sponsers rather than advertisers, a little ala Soulemama.

I've been reading about this and it seems there are two main ways to make money on a blog:

sell something (literally or through ads)
sell a service

Has anyone read Tribes by Seth Goodin? It's amazing and has lots of relevant stuff to think about.

I'm planning on using my site as more of a service based site and am building it up to have presence. For example, a place to land ppl so they know who I am, what my feel is etc.

It seems to me that most people who end up having thousands and thousands of followers just end up writing a book because they have built their tribe who will then buy the book and recommend it to friends. To me a blog seems part of a larger system of self-employment (or just for fun )

Just what I need -- more places to procrastinate when I should be doing my work (writing that is)! Thanks for all the new links mamas!

Flowers is right.

For example, I use my blog to sell a service. So I write informative and educational articles that help others which lets people know who I am and what I'm about, and also lends me credibility. I help people, and if they want individual help, they can sign up for a reading with me directly.

But my husband doesn't sell a service. He's one of those people who had so many readers that he was offered a book deal by Hay House (they came to him, he didn't even solicit them). he just kept writing great content and built up a following. He was able to leverage his traffic and put up ads for affiliate programs and Joint Venture deals.

When he started, he had Google ads and they brought in a lot of money over time. They got to a point where he was making six figures a year just from the google ads, but he recently removed all the Google ads to streamline his site more. He still does joint venture deals, and he has book sales, and now he's working on information products which should do well since his audience is primed and ready to go.

Build your traffic and there are all kinds of ways to monetize it.

I agree, I think adsense google adds are so ugly. I have never once clicked on one of those. I am actually really turned off by a blog that has a ton of ad's on it. Unless they look "nice" and are placed right, it irritates me and I most likely won't come back.

Heh, Erin; I was thinking "Six figures a year? What on earth does he do?" when I realised you must be Steve's wife. I came across his blog the other day while researching polyphasic sleep - had no idea you were an MDC mama! Small world.

This thread is reminding me to go update my blog.

Smokering: Yeah he's actually considering going back to polyphasic sleep for a bit.

I've been on MDC for a long time. I was the webmaster in like 2002 and worked for Peggy and the gang for about a year. I don't participate often but still lurk around and pop in to threads that interest me.

which blog makes 40k?!?!

Dooce, I believe. I don't enjoy her attitude.

I RSS'd Smokey the Magnificent (fellow southern hemispherian!) and Lia Mack so far. My blog is about atheist parenting and personal development so I have to stick within my core themes. Thank you Lisa, I subbed to your MDC meme - what a great idea!

I'm really not interested in making money from my blog. I don't count hits but I do keep track of subscribers. I'm ultra-fussy about the content because I am writing a motherhood memoir and the blog needs to be an accompaniment to that (should it ever be published). Also, it may eventually become my writer's platform and medium for promotion, which is why I chose a domain name that is my own name.

Is the 'famous Steve' Steve Pavlina? I used to follow him.
