But build traffic first. put something of value up there. Make sure the search engines are picking up on your articles. Get linked on other people's sites.

hmmm .. I hate google ads, don't like text link ads, don't really want to sell a product... well....

For now I don't care so much about making money. I use my blog as a place to practice writing. I would, of course, love more readers but I haven't done a very good job at promoting it. If, down the road, I somehow manage to get lots of followers I may consider making it work financially but for now it's just a little fun hobby that makes ME happy

Does anyone have any great affiliate programs they'd like to share? Do they really bring in a substantial income?

I think making money through writing is all about diversifying. I don't think my blog would ever make enough to replace my current income (working part-time), but by adding some tasteful ads, sponsors and affiliate programs in ADDITION to selling articles, participating in revenue sharing article sites (like Examiner.com, ehow.com) I may eventually get there. That's the plan, anyway.

My blog is mainly to update family and friends. I removed Google Adsense as it looked sooo barfy! That, and I only made 68 cents in a couple of months, haha.

I will be starting another blog shortly which I will be aiming to monetize. This thread has great tips and I will definitely be returning to it! I agree that without good content any of your money making techniques will be useless.

I notice from places like Blog Catalogue that some people will follow my blog, leave comments, or join my "friends list" just to build their traffic. I'm always quick to delete them

I haven't taken the time to figure out how to add a siggy after my posts but since we're on the topic:

Ugh I just figured out how to use add sense. i used to think I was really computer literate and now I am finding this is not so.... I am using blogging in place of writing in bed nad tucking pictures in a diary. Not sure how it is working for me yet as I have blogs all over the net. The one in my siggy is just my latest attempt at having some me time. I love writing and it is soemthig I have not been doing since I have not been in school.

I've been wondering about this too. I like writing. I would like to get paid for it somehow, at some point. Howevah...

My blog is We Don't Buy It. As in, we are living a simple life on The Compact and trying not to buy new things. Who is going to advertise on that blog?! What ad would I accept on that blog?!

Is there a way to only accept ads for kefir grains, or essential oils or things like that? Maybe get a sponsorship somehow? How do you get a sponsorship?

Laura, there is an mdc mama who sells kombucha starts and such and on their site they ask if you want to do affiliate stuff on your blog.

I would put out an announcement on your blog of exactly what you are looking for. Maybe even make it a page so that someone who is reading and clicking around will see "want to sponser" and click.

Also, go around to places you like and send them a professional email telling them who you are and what you want.
