I am currently living in a very large (3000sf) outdated rental home. The reason we originally moved here was because I knew the neighbors well. They have since become like family. The yard is large and my kids can move freely between indoors and outdoors daily. However, the house itself is just not a good fit for us. It is me with my 4 children, 3 under three. I can't keep the place clean to save my life!
We have the opportunity to move to a MUCH smaller home in a busier area of town. It also has a whole community of people (very intentionally) from the local university and church. I'm not too worried about the smaller inside- it still has three bedrooms but only one bathroom. My bigger concern is the lack of outdoor space. My kids love to roam outside and the new house has way less space- and is much closer to the street. It has a well secured pool that takes up a lot of the backyard which could potentially offer an outlet for their activity needs, but obviously an option that I have to be fully a part of.
The biggest thing is the financial part. The rent is only $100 less, but the energy costs, the gas costs (being closer to everything) and not needing to hire a landscaper (part of the lease agreement here) make it even cheaper overall.
I just worry about the overall picture. It's not that I am totally unhappy here but financially my bank account is empty by the end of the month and I am wondering how I am going to pay some debt down. But we will miss our current neighbors dearly.
Anybody go from lots of space to just a little? How did your kids do???
