A few questions from a CD newbie

We are starting the transition from sposies to CD. I have only purchased three CD so far because I just wanted to try them out. But now I have a few questions after trying them yesterday.

#1. The Fuzzi Bunz diaper seems really bulky. Is that normal? We were told my son is a medium but I don't know how much he weighs right now. I'm assuming in the range of 22-25 lbs.

#2. The Bum Genius we bought leaked at the sides onto his clothes but he had it on for a couple hours. How long can you go without having to change the CD usually? Does leaking automatically mean that the diaper doesn't fit right?

#3. What is your CD wash routine like? Can you wash the pee diapers with the poop diapers or do you need to wash them separately. We have really old, awful, non-efficient washer/dryer so I'm looking for the most simple wash routine out there that works.

#4. We have a diaper genie II. Does anyone know if you can use this with CD? If not, what is the best plan to keep the smells at bay.

Sorry so long but our trial really didn't go that great and I need some help!

All diapers should be changed with every pee. Don't know why your BG was leaking- was it new or used when you bought it? AIO or pocket? If pocket, stuffed with what?

Fuzzibunz are pretty trim- depending on what they're stuffed with- what did you stuff with?

All wash together.

The diaper genie won't work. I use a step on trash can with a bummis bag as a liner- dump all in washer, rinse, wash (hot) with a little purex free and clear, then run an extra hot rinse.

Well, it was kind of hard to tell if/when he wet the first time wearing a CD. I find it really easy to tell with the sposies but I'm new to this so I probably needed to change it but just didn't know it yet. I'm sure that I will get better as time goes by. The BG is an AIO so it wasn't stuffed with anything extra. Just used it as was.

The fuzzi bunz was stuffed with the one liner it came with. I didn't buy any extra liners.

If the diapers are leaking, and the insert (or the fabric inside the AIO, in that case) is totally soaked, then you probably just need either more absorbency or more frequent changing. A cloth diaper doesn't have the super-absorbent capacity of disposables, and AIOs are not usually especially absorbent in general. You may find yourself changing as often as every hour or two, and that's okay because it's so much healthier for baby's skin.

You can also add more absorbency. A pocket diaper may need two inserts in the daytime for some kids, and you might even need three at night or for naptime or on a long car trip. You don't have to buy special inserts if you don't want to-- anything absorbent will do. We've used prefold diapers in our pocket diapers, washcloths, clean dishtowels. And you can also add more absorbency to the AIO by simply laying an insert or folded prefold or washcloth inside the diaper. Just make sure everything's snugly tucked in at the legs and waist of the diaper.

Even the best diaper will leak if it's saturated-- the wetness has to go somewhere.

If the diaper is gaping at the legs, though, the leaking might be due to a poor fit. But it doesn't sound like that's the case for you.

I wash all mine together, and I've never had any kind of fussy laundry routine. I throw them in a dry pail. When it's time to wash, I toss them in the machine. I run a cold prewash cycle if there's poopy diapers in there, to get the worst of it off. Then I run a hot wash with a cold rinse. Then I take them out and sniff-- if they smell clean, I dry them. Occasionally they still smell like pee, and then I just wash then again.

Absorbency is probably the issue--we use microfiber towels that you get in the auto section for extra stuffing or terry cloth washcloths.

We wash everything together every two days.

As far as keeping the stink at bay we just have a plain old trash can and lid with a deoderized trashbag in it with a deo disk at the bottom. You can make your own or by them.

To make your own simply mix baking soda, water and a little bit of tea tree oil until it's the thickness of frosting then pour it into a muffin tin and let it dry for a couple of days. tip them over and bye bye stink.

Compared to some other diapers, I also find fuzzi bunz a bit on the bulky side, but I love them because they work so well.

Your bum genius is probably leaking because it's an AIO - I have a few and find they're not nearly as absorbent as a pocket. So they do have to be changed more frequently. Does yours also have a pocket? If so, adding an extra insert will help. If not, change it after an hour.

I was wondering about how you prepped them - for the ones that are leaking it could be that it has not yet reached its full absorbing power. Just a thought.
