I have been wearing my baby mostly in an ergo (sometimes a moby wrap..) wondering when is an appropriate time to try using it on my back so I can have a little more flexibility for cooking etc....she is almost 9 months old...

Go for it! The Ergo would be the one to use, and she is more than likely completely ready. Just practice over a bed, in front of a mirror, until you have the hang of it.
Don't use the Moby Wrap for a back carry though, no matter what the instruction booklet says -- it's just too stretchy for a safe back carry.

so is the only safe way to put a newborn on your back, in a wrap? I loved putting my first baby on my back in a babyhawk, but probably didn't do it until she was at least 7-8 months, just because it took that long to get the courage. But I really prefer wearing a baby on my back for doing chores around the house and cooking and such because it feels safer to have them out of the way. This time I'm sure I'm going to want to start wearing this baby on my back even earlier and I'm wondering what the best way to do that is? Also I'm getting a beco butterfly II for mother's day and I'm wondering how soon I can wear the baby on my back in that?

as far as the butterfly, i was able to get my 3 month old on my back with it, but she was on the big/tall side. i would say see how you feel about it at 3-4 months. it's definitely earlier for back carries than other SSCs.

If you search youtube, there are a lot of videos showing how to wrap a baby on your back.
I am not comfortable w/ the idea, but that's just b/c I know how DD would feel about it!
Around 3 months I started slinging her on my back and she loved it. I did too as I could get more done!
She especially loves slinging on DH's back as the sling is tighter on him and she can just "lie" there lol.

I have my 4 month old on my back right now as I type- she's snoozing away!
I didn't start wearing my DS at all until 4 months and didn't get a MT and him up on my back until about 6 months, but this time I wanted to start earlier. The only reason I waited as long a I did-we just started it a week or so ago- is because she has pretty bad reflux and did a lot of choking, and I wanted to be able to see her. The choking has improved (or she's better at dealing with it) so I am fine with her back there now.
I believe the Kozy website has instructions and pics for getting a nb on your back.
