What's safe to put on cloth diapered bottoms?

I know I ready somewhere that you need to be careful about what you put on baby's bum because it can interfere with cloth diaper absorbency. I suppose ideally you don't need to put anything on baby's bum, but in case I do - what's safe and what ingredients should I avoid to preserve the diapers?

Thanks!

Breastmilk is safe for diapers.

Other than that, I would use an old piece of cloth or flushable liner to line the diaper if you need to use creams.

I love Angel Baby Bottom Balm.

Another vote for angel baby bottom balm, particularly for light irritation. If ds has a really bad rash (he has food allergies, so it happens sometimes), then we use weleda diaper care and for that I use a flushable or fleece liner.

we have waleda and burts bees. the waleda i use with no qualms about my diaps, the bb i use with a liner because it has zinc. this is from our local diaper service's website: "Please do not use Regular or Original Formula Desitin, this particular formula permanently damages diapers due to high amounts of cod liver oil and zinc oxide. You can use any other kind of baby ointment, including other products in the Desitin line" (emphasis mine)

Does this matter as much if you use the "flushable" liners (i.e. imse vimse)? I would think that helps.
