Amish Friendship bread

Thread Starter
So I just got some of this batter from a friend, and the recipe she gave me has a ton of sugar and instant vanilla pudding in it. What else can I do with it? Maybe just add some nuts or dried fruit? Anyone have any variations on this? I'm more of a TF girl, so I'd like some healthy bread if possible.

And btw, how are the Amish getting away with ziploc bags and instant pudding?

Ziploc bags and instant pudding aren't really a threat to their family or community values. The Amish don't shun things just because they are modern...

I love the friendship bread with all the junk in it. You can try chocolate pudding too. Yumm!! Having a treat now and then won't hurt anyone.

I googled Amish Friendship Bread Recipe and came up with several options last time I had a batch to use. I found one that didn't have any prepackaged ingredients in it at all, since the pudding mix was a deal killer for me. It turned out really yummy. Do a search, I'm sure you'll find several options.

Oh man... when I was a kid sometimes some circulating dough would reach my mother. It was sooo delicious!

Sometimes tasty treats aren't nutritious, but they are totally delicious & delightful & worth all the "emptiness." Amish Friendship bread is definitely one of those things!

Sadly I've tried to recreate the starter (yeah, I've tried all those recipes) but I'm sourdough defunct. For whatever reason, fermenting bacteria hate me. They turn into alcohol. Bummer.

I made a batch of the regular recipe (although with half the sugar). Everyone loved it - of course! Then I made it without the pudding and subbed the other half of the sugar with date sugar. I also used half whole wheat flour. It was also really good, and everyone still loved it! I think it's very forgiving stuff :-).

Thank You for making me laugh. I just got a batch of the same dough and I did not realize how much sugar or instant pudding was in it until I started making it two nights ago. I was shocked. I am no puritan but it seems ridiculous. I cut the sugar because I only had so much and it was ok but way too sweet. I also had no instant pudding so I added kudzu root as a gelling agent. Nothing to compare to my husbands homeade sour dough bread. I guess my treats are not always sweet.

I have had a friend bring me TWO bags.

Yes, the recipe called for tons of sugar, bad oils, instant pudding...blech. I can't even bring myself to buy some of the ingredients.

I subbed a quarter cup of corn starch and some vanilla for the pudding mix, cut the sugar by a bit, and subbed applesauce for some of the oil. The bread still came out very tasty, and I generally don't like baked goods that have been super healthified. It seems like the recipe is really forgiving.

I LOVE THAT STUFF. I did this thing where I was doubling the recipe and eventually I ended up with like 12 bags just for myself and couldn't give it away fast enough. I made 12 loaves and froze them (note: IMO, it's even BETTER after it's been frozen) and we enjoyed them for awhile. I never used any of the instant pudding either but I'm blanking on what I used. I always substitute stuff for my bread recipes, but I love making sourdoughs the old-fashioned way so I just mix in dry or wet ingredients until it feels right. I think I might have used maple yogurt actually.

LOL, am I the only one who cringes when someone sends a starter their way? Once you're done with it, you have like 12x the amount you started with and you've got to give it away or try to figure out how to keep it or whatever.

I ended up wasting a ton of it last time. I made some of the bread and it wasn't nearly good enough to warrant all the time and energy.
