Raw feeders, where do you get inexpensive raw meat from for your dogs (..or cats...or ferrets, for that matter..)? Just wondering.

Right now I order it through a friend that gets is from wholesaler, she packages it herself and them delivers to my door! Before when I packaged it myself, I went to a wholesaler and got it at price. I think I paid around $.59/lb for it. It's much cheaper to do it yourself but very time consuming. I get my chicken from her but I buy my beef, organs, etc. from lower priced grocery stores.

my husband made me stop buying raw from the grocery store because it was getting too expensive. I been giving canned food because i'm not surewhere to look for decent prices on raw. I heart raw, though. My dog loved it. She really came out on it. I can do th organs from the store. Everything else was getting too expensive.

Some stuff you can get at regular stores, like chicken leg quarters ($1/lb on sale). I really like asian grocery stores for both their variety and prices ($0.49/lb and up depending on item), but I have heard that other ethnic stores are good also.

Occasionally I also buy in bulk (by the case, 30-50 lbs each) from a raw feeder who knows someone involved in meat packaging. These are usually around $0.50/lb but you need a freezer to store it. I have an upright freezer so I'm able to get 120-130 lbs worth in there plus our food that is already in there. This helps to make the drive to get it worthwhile for me. One way to find sources like this is to Google for raw co-ops and look for a Yahoo group in your area (that's how I found it). Here is one site with info, although it's mostly geared to Canadians (and has some processed food sources also which I do not use): http://lepusreg.tripod.com/NRS.html

BTW, these prices are in Canada where I hear it is normally more expensive to feed raw than in the US.

On a another forum, pet related, that I go on quite a few people on there put ads on craigslist for freezer burnt meat. I thought maybe it might seem risky , but I know most of the people had really good outcomes. A lot of them usually ended up with really large cuts of game.

Thanks for the tips. I'll see what we have available in my little isolated area.

Grocery store - I go a little farther away from home to a store that carries more ethinic items - I can get gizzards, turkey backs, leg quarters, liver, turkey & pork necks all for very good prices. I buy in bulk, seperate out into indivdual meals and freeze.

Occasionally at my local grocery store they will have a really good sale on chicken wings, thighs and drumsticks (turkey too) and I will buy those if they are on sale.
