There is NO rain in the forecast for tomorrow or Saturday:.

Maybe I can finally plant some things. If I had any ambition I would go out now and put some seeds in.

yep, you should be able to, I would tear at the sides and the bottom of the newspaper just so there is an opening where the roots can sneak through, sorta like you would do with the little peat pots.

Something dug up some of my fish heads last night : I don't think it was a skunk but they are wreaking havoc elsewhere in the garden

I'm trapping skunks this weekend and relocating them up in the mountains. I can't wait for them to have a new home

Deb I am going to have to post a picture of Marah's garden for you. She planted an entire packet of peas in a tiny little square.

That's wonderful! Makes me want to go take pictures of my garden!

How did you get your lettuce seeds to germinate before the weeds??? I'm so jealous of anyone who can direct seed like that! The mustard around here is serious competition for anything that takes longer than 12 hours to germinate

ITA. We had to start our lettuce inside.

I have no idea...I just threw them in the ground..there are lots of weeds though but not in the row..as soon as it stops raining next week I'll get to the weeding

AllisonK- My oldest has a potato ..it came up before mine! So cute!

Gardening newbie here - DH is quite the outdoorsman but I've got a black thumb. That being said, DH still went quite overboard this year and bought two kinds of beans, peas, squash, pumpkins, two kinds of corn, onions, potatoes, two kinds of cucumber (I don't even like cucumber!), two blueberry bushes, carrots, lettuce, and ground cherries. And I still have to get him to buy me a tomato plant. Oh, and last fall he planted half the garden with horseradish, his great money-making scheme. Did I mention DH has ADD? At least he didn't buy 10 tomato plants like he did a few summers ago. Seriously, who eats that many tomatoes? So far he only has the horseradish and half the potatoes planted, but this weekend me and DS are going to start some of the seeds indoors. He's been beside himself with excitement about planting stuff in the garden but it's still too cold to start seeds outside. I don't know what we're going to do with all this food! I have great intentions of freezing at least the beans, I can do that. I'll definitely be looking for preserving tips in the fall

I am bragging. My garden is beautiful. I have a ton of tomatoes, the yellow pears are just going nuts. By next week I'll have yellow squash to eat.
Also noticed my acorn squash is starting to flower...I am so proud of it!

Well I'm about to harvest my 3rd crop of tomatoes

That's what we always tell the neighbor anyway, we're in serious competition with them

I'm totally jealous! My peas are barely up! How hot is it where you are?

I'm so jealous of those of you that are getting tomatoes and stuff already! It is too early to even transplant tomatoes here! I'm doing some direct seed crops this weekend, I am getting sooo anxious to get some yummies!

I was kidding about the tomatoes I'd be very surprised if someone was actually getting tomatoes already .... unless they're in Chile I guess

Scarlet; yeah, I know I can change the posts per page, but the long threads are still long threads! I am not sure if there is still an issue with super sized threads, but they used to really slow down MDC and contribute to the crashes. Thank you for the suggestion though, it is something I never got around to doing

Cultivating; Marigold seedlings smell like marigolds . I just pinch a little tiny leaf and sniff it. (eh, my neighbors already think I am weird). That's the only way I can tell them from the stupid ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) when they are small.

I am also jealous of people who's gardens are already bearing. My peas just sprouted! I am thinking of getting some brussels sprouts from the greenhouse. Did I mention I got a job at a garden center? I am limiting myself to $10 a week out of my pay for plants. Thanks to you all, I have a list of fruit trees waiting to be bought! By next week I will have enough to buy one fruit tree... but what to buy first!? The neighbors have apples and pears, so I would not need to buy two right away, but I would love peaches. And the blueberries are only $5... and they have a bunch of reliance grapes.... oh my gosh! Someone stop me!

I want to work at a garden center! Do you get an employee discount?
