How did you get your lettuce seeds to germinate before the weeds??? I'm so jealous of anyone who can direct seed like that! The mustard around here is serious competition for anything that takes longer than 12 hours to germinate [/QUOTE]

If you're referring to mustard greens...you can eat those, too! They're probably even better than lettuce. My grandmother used to walk out into the backyard and pick what we considered weeds...then she'd come in and cook it up with a little bit of bacon. Yum.

Oh sorry, forgot to say planted 48 tomato plants yesterday and another lettuce row. : Will plant 18 more tomatoes in the next week.

I updated my garden pictures in my siggy, got the whole month of March uplaoded Not been good on keeping up with my photo journey.

Yesterday I feel like I got a bunch accomplisded out there, no seeds planted other than some flowers in the little strip of land between the sidewalk and the road out front which is actually the neighbor's property (I asked before I worked up that area - not just planting in other folk's yards ) My garden beds are looking good, it's a little overcast today so will be a little nicer to work out there today.

Goal today is to get some seeds in the ground!

Another reason my food bill is so high!! I need to find someone to show me all of these things! I have books , we eat some of it but I get intimadated!

can I fry dandelions with bacon also?

I'm new to this board - we are renting a house on a half-acre. Moved in last September, too late to really do anything. We've put in 5 raised beds (3.5 x 16') this spring and have another raised bed that's probably 10x16' with really rocky soil.

We've been getting things going - have peas, spinach, chard, some oriental veggies, radishes, salad greens and potatoes all coming up. Just got some tomato plants yesterday and have them outside but semi-under cover (big overhang). We haven't really gardened before, but I did a bunch of reading over the winter (I'm a bit of a geek that way) and now we just need some hands-on experience to contribute to my book-learning!

Anyways, I'll probably lurk around here to see if I can pick anything up. I'm in the pacific northwest (in Canada) and we are pretty mild here. I'm a bit inland and higher up - I think we're zone 7 or 8...

Also not sure what we're going to do with everything once it arrives! (Assuming, of course, that everything thrives in our new garden!) So I'll probably be coming here for some advice about that too!

so far so slow. I did tackle turning our composter today (and found three tea lights in it????? what??? ) The stuff I planted in our cold frame has not yet sprouted....we went to a lovely organic garden centre today and priced plum, pear, cherry and apple trees, and strawberries, raspberries and rhubarb!!! so excited about rhubarb! And we are going to get our friend over on Tuesday to help us build our terraced beds!

that's all for now...but enjoying reading others inspiration.

Did I already mention my new-to-me cold frame that I got from craigslist? Yeah, so far I'm liking it. We'll see how my lettuce and broccoli like it... Need to go fertilize it in there soon, I forgot to do that the other day.

Nothing exciting here. Still need to transplant my tomatoes, it's been raining, and it's birthday week here (my middle turned 3yo on Friday, my turn on Tuesday, then an aunt's, MIL's, etc.).


Does anybody have Canadice grapes? How do you like them? I can only find those and seedless Concord at my local nursery (they ordered a ton of grapes and such this year, but only got like a third of what they'd ordered because so many people upped their stock this year!). Concord I'm okay with, especially for juice, but the other grapes will be mostly for fresh eating and such. And the bags at the grocery store don't exactly have variety names and labels on 'em, you know?

WWWWAAAAAAAA!!!!! Our tomatoes got frosted . It was only supposed to go down to 40F a few nights back, and we woke up to frost . They'd been in the ground for two weeks already and growing so nicely. Sigh. Now I have dead tomato plants to replace.

On the upside, my ground cherry seeds are here .

Yep, I think so. You'll want to cook them in a little bit of water and then put in a little bit of bacon (or olive oil or whatever). If you eat the mustard greens, you may want to mix in some collard greens, too.

We had dandelions for dinner last night...fried with lots of olive oil, an onion & some salt, they tasted pretty good, but were very gritty!

I have one question... would you ship to me? I know some nurseries can't ship to me, WA or OR. I really, really wanted to try out Reliance grapes, too. My local nursery's only got seedless Concords and Canadice. *sigh*

I think I killed my one little tomato plant I'd stuck outside in a cloche to play with. We were gone for a night. So we'll see if it recovers or if it was one of this year's casualties.

Tried dandelion greens this AM..they were a hit with everyone!

I mulched the garden yesturday with organic straw and lawn clippings. So happy to see my garden growing this is turning out already to be a great season and the best garden Ive had ever!

Absolutely!

I always make them the way my grandma did - with a hot bacon dressing. So, you don't actually cook the greens, but you pour the dressing over them while still hot, so they wilt a bit.

That is great! Glad to hear it! I think this year will be my most productive, don't know about the tomato plants. Wish I had done them all the winter sowing way. I've got some huge San Marzano plants ready to be transplanted that were winter sown.

Will be in and out this week. Moving this weekend. Will be around more after next week.

Can I compost lint from the dryer? I think I can but am not remembering where I read that.

I bought a bunch of plants yesterday. I have no idea where I am going to put them. I went into the little hardware store near me for bamboo sticks and their plants were on sale for $1. So I got some interesting things to try. Now to find space for them.

On the bright side, DH got a tractor with a dump cart.

The broccoli looks really good, and most of the onions do, too. We need to get these peas in the ground, though. They're starting to tangle around each other!!

Well, it is wild mustard and it is edible but it is not good. It is has very coarse hairs from a young age and it is super bitter. Even if it was good I wouldn't want it in the garden. There are fields and fields of it growing around my house that I could pick. It is such a determined plant :
