Domperidone and Mama's weight :)

Hi ladies,
I know a lot of you have experience with domperidone. I took dom and pumped for 13 months. It's been 3 weeks now since I stopped both. I was really hoping that it was the dom and lactating that was keeping me from losing the last 12 lbs of baby weight. I have lost 2 lbs in three weeks and that is with extremely careful eating. I know that I have been eating much better...way less sugar and processed food than I did at my normal weight before baby. (actually I have been eating really carefully for months) So, I am really frustrated. I only gained 15 lbs (delivered at 25.5 weeks) and I am carrying 12 of them. Any insights? Was I wrong to blame it on the dom and lactating?

Domperidone will keep weight on and be very hard to lose while on it. Now that you have weaned off yu will find the weight will come off. Just watch your portions and get some walking in. I have lost the weight after each time I weaned off.

when you take a med long term tat effects weight and metabolism it usually takes a while for your body to readjust afterwards.

I was on an antidepressants for a long time a few years ago. I gained weight from it! anyhow when I went off it took me a year before I started loosing weight. I went ot the gym and ate perfectly but still couldn't loose for a while.

that said it likely wont take you a yr to adjust! my case was extreme, but it could take a few months. I would just continue eating and getting plenty of rest and exercise and your body will likely kick in soon enough.

Can I blame domperidone for gaining 8 pounds out of nowhere? I've been on it for three weeks and while I haven't eaten perfectly, I know I haven't eaten so much to cause this weight gain on my own. The other culprit may be my scale just lying to me...

I'm sure the dom is my doom ... I still have 15 pounds to go to my pre-baby weight, and I eat awesome and exercise everyday. I just chock it up to the cost of bf'ing ... I will admit it makes me look forward to weaning in a way. But not too soon!

I'm packing about 10lbs of baby weight... And I was down to my pre-preg weight before I Started the dom..

It's worth it though, IMO.

hmmm....Well I guess this is a reason to be thankful that the dom ISN'T working for me and I can stop taking it as soon as I finish the bottle. Although, I'm really sad it hasn't helped my supply since it seems to be the magic drug for so many of you.

It may take longer than a few weeks for your body to re-adjust, but I do think you will find that having stopped the dom will allow you to lose the extra weight with very little difficulty. Adding some extra walking to your routine should help. I found I lost the weight quite easily after stopping the dom with my first dd, not immediately, but within a couple of months. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the encouragement. I weened off Zoloft a few weeks ago also. I really think that it was contributing to my weight problem. I am going to try to eat sensibly and move more. I am just getting so frustrated!

leigh09, did you lose weight once you were done breastfeeding?

Im a low supply mamma and tend to put 30 lbs with each pregnancy. When I take the domperidone cocktail (dom, goats rue, lactation blends etc) I tend to pack on 10 -15 MORE pounds.

WIth both pregnancy -after I stop pumping (between 6-8 months post partum) I tend to not eat for 2-3 days when I quit -mostly depression (and the my body needs to know the domperidone is gone and doesnt need to hold the food in my belly anymore ) :P and then the great weight fall off starts. With both girls within 4 months all the weight FALLS off.

Now granted me losing 40 lbs is nothing in the sense that when I deliver I am over 300 lbs. BUt it completely sucks to having delivered a baby, trying my best to nurse and continuing to gain no matter what I do.

Good Luck.

When did you all start to gain the weight from the Dom? Did it take awhile? I've been on Dom for almost 2 mos prob and I haven't gained any but I haven't lost any either. Just wondering if I should expect a weight gain jump here soon or if I just got lucky to not gain. Then again, i'm still holding onto 20 extra lbs from the pregnancy.

I've been on 160mg of dom daily for over three months and haven't GAINED, but haven't LOST either. I'm still carrying 20 pounds of baby weight.

I've been on 90 mg for eight months and haven't gained any weight.
But then again I wonder if it's doing any good yet am too afraid to stop...

yes, i lost my 40 lbs of baby weight after i stopped nursing ds and 17 lbs of baby weight after i stopped nursing dd (i had quite different pregnancy weight gains). i never lost an ounce during breastfeeding. i completely sympathize with your frustrations, especially when nursing is like a magic weight loss for some women.

Add me to the list...

... of people who have gained on Dom. 10 lbs. to date, and I really didn't need it after gaining 70 during my pregnancy. I have to stop it because the dom is making me crazy. If anyone needs any, I have tons that I bought from inhousepharmacy -- just PM me.
