Mom and baby both on meds at same time?

What happens when a mom and her BF baby both need the same medication?

For instance - I recently had an injury and had to be on motrin full time for a week or so. I've read that motrin is safe for BFing but can't find info on if any is passed thru to BM and if so, how much. So is it safe for the baby also to be given motrin during that time?

And now DD (10 months) has strep throat and is on anti-biotics. There's a chance I might need to be on anti-biotics myself for something different. How does that affect BFing? If I'm on one anti-biotic AND she is on one (the same med or a different one) is that safe?

Anyone know about this? Or where I could find it? Or what keywords I could use to search for answers?

ETA - Now I'm back to asking this question. DD and I both have fevers, she's on tylenol, I want to take something. Would me taking motrin while she's taking tylenol be safe?

I have to respectfully disagree with this. Most pharmacists I have met know exactly nothing about breastfeeding. You might want to look at Dr. Hale's website or submit your question to him. Dr. Jack Newman is also a wonderful resource, as is www.kellymom.com

DD and I both had strep when she as about 7 mo. old. We both took a course of antibiotics. We were both fine. The breasts are wonderful filters, so your baby will only get a very negligible about of most meds you take. Of course all those antibiotics can cause a lovely yeast (thrush) infection in you and baby, so be prepared for that!

well a good pharmacist would be your best bet then. lol.
i had to have a c/s and was given antibiotics which did cause yeast problems for ds2- a horrid yeast rash. taking probotics helps.
